9 February 1855

Fatal coal pit accident - On Friday morning week an accident of a fatal nature occurred to a lad named Storrie, about 15 years of age, residing in Whitletts, at one of the pits of the Ayr colliery, known as the Black Diamond Pit. It seems that the deceased and his father worked in the same room, and, on going down the pit on Friday morning, finding the props they had previously put up had been removed by the night shift men,they, fearing the roof would fall, put in props to support it. The unfortunate deceased was told by his father to put in a third, but he did not consider it necessary, and shortly afterwards a portion of the roof fell on him, killing him instantaneously. Sorry I may have missed your post - there are 3 Patons mentioned

1) Janet Paton wife of James Cochrane died 1869
2) George Paton and his family (including wife Annie Mitchell) - George died 1914 , Annie in 1912
3) David Paton died 1776

                                 George and Annie were my gggrandparents,was hoping to find another George who married Mary Campbell in St Quivox church in 1801 and died c1841 might have been buried there also,

Sorry no trace of any others - there are several Campbells listed but none of them show any links to your other names.

Unfortunately pre 1855 death records for St Quivox are as rare as the proverbial hens teeth (according to the local FHS they have been unable to trace any surviving records for the parish)

Looking for Brac(k)enridge family from that area.  Mary Brakenridge (McLatchie) in 1851 census (Maybole) lists St Quivox as birthplace.  I can't find any info on her birth, or her parents.  Mary and Margaret are listed as servants in John Dick household 1841, and presuming it is she married to John McLatchie, blacksmith, in 1843, and in 1851 census with children, also Maybole.  Any help on the Brackenridge line greatly appreciated.

Sorry no Brackenridge or McLatchies - although there is one Margaret Breckenridge there is no obvious link with your names.

The 1821 census for the area which only lists the head of the household and their occupation has 3 McLatchie families. The same census also lists two Brackenridge families :
John a sawyer living Garden Street Wallacetown
Thomas a weaver living Content Street Content
