Foster Brown
« on: Wednesday 20 February 08 12:25 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone can fill in some blanks on my grandfather Foster Brown.
He was born 1869 in Newcastle, his father was John and his mother Mary Jane ( nee Thompson) Foster had five sisters and a brother named Thomas Thompson Brown. His father John was a painter by trade.
In 1891 census Foster is listed as a chemist assistant residing at 95 Elswick Road, Newcastle.
In 1901 he is in Halifax, married with two children and is a stone mason's labourer. It is said he was wounded in the Boer War.
So in the 10 years between 1891 and 1901 there are blank areas.
Did he join a local army regiment, which one?,and how did he end up in Halifax.
He was a Geordie but there was never any mention of this in the family.
Foster died in 1915. Would be thankful for any help.

Regards
Tre.

The local regiment would be the Northumberland Fusiliers whose depot was in Newcastle, now amalgamated into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The main Boer War lasted from 1899 to 1902 so if he fought in South Africa it seems more likely to have been in an earlier conflict, perhaps the Matabele uprising in Rhodesia in 1893. If he was living with his grandmother on Elswick Rd in 1891 had he fallen out with his family perhaps as young men often will?

I am the granddaughter of Thomas Thompson Brown.  He married Eleanor Mather, had five sons and was a stockbroker's clerk in Newcastle, where he died in 1937 at the age of 57 years.  One of my cousins did considerable research into our side of the family but was unable to find out anything much about Foster Brown apart from that he had married a Henrietta Schroeder and had two sons, one John Victor Brown, born on 20 th July 1904 and baptised in to the New Church in Newcastle on 25th September of the same year.

I have no address for him apart from 95 Elswick Street, and it is not clear how long, and if, he in fact lived there.  It seems this was the family home.

Sorry, overlooked one piece of paper.  The Church of the New Jerusalem records show Foster (and I assume Henrietta) was living at 54 Fairfield Road Jesmond at the time of John Victor's baptism in 1904.  Foster was a chemist.
