Peter Jordan- Tailor
« on: Wednesday 20 February 08 10:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi , I wonder if anyone can add any information AS TO where in Mayo my Jordan family come from. My great grandfather was James born 1847 and he married Helen Mc Donaugh from Galway in Leeds Yorkshire in 1878.
Patrick Jordan was witness at marriage and certificate states his father was Peter Jordan whose occupation is given as Tailor-but he is deceased.
All we have from census is James was born in Mayo but where?
Is there any info. on his father Peter the tailor.
Very much appreciate any help in this search.

 Regards
Trena

Hello Trena,

What denomination were the Jordan and McDonagh families? Were they  members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Trena,

The Jordan I am descended from (Ann Jordan b about 1837) apparently came from either Lewisburgh (1861 census in New Mills, Derbyshire) or possibly Westport depending on which census you read.  I say possibly Westport as there was an Ann Jordan from Westport in the 1851 census who was the daughter of a Richard Jordan, who was a journeyman Tailor, living in Manchester.  I've never been able to confirm this is my family, but it says on the census that Richard Jodan was from Kilgeever in County Mayo, which is the same parish as Lewisburgh, and not far from Westport.  I know Ann Jordan was definately a Catholic.  I don't know if that helps you, but if there is some link to my Jordan's I would be interested to knows as it's a complete brick wall for me!
Jakeman, Jeynes (Worc); Barnes (Lancs); Jordan (Mayo); Ballance (Wicklow); Wilcox, Cox (Staffs); Leach (Flint); McMahon (Ireland somewhere!); Twizell, Taylor (Northb)
