Ocupation looks like 'Tape M S'
« on: Monday 18 February 08 21:11 GMT (UK) »
I've an ancestor in the 1841 census who's occupation appears to be something like ' Tape M S' or it could be M F or even M J. There are others with the same occupation but still others described as 'cotton  M S' (or the above variants). I know that he went on to work in a silk mill but don't know if this occupation is related. Can anyone help?

The reference is HO 107/119/2 p11 (Congleton Cheshire).

Many thanks

Molly

Hi Molly,
For an 1841 Census reference you need HO107, piece, book, folio, page

Hi Stan,

I'm hoping the person in question was named either John Bayley or Matthew McDonnell .. fingers crossed .. but I don't suppose it matters either way ..

I wondered about the M standing for Maker .. but not sure about the Journeyman.

There did appear to be quite a cottage industry going on and even the female family members had the same occupation initials .. following the word Tape?

I wonder if Stan has come up with anything yet?  :-\

I wonder if it is 'f' for Tape Manufacture ??? At one time there were more than 20 working mills in and around Congleton, producing the silk ribbons and bows.

HO 107 piece 119 book 2 folio 10 page 14 will get a page showing same entries.
