st Francis church Cumberland st Glasgow 1890

Beautiful Church it was I was christened there in 1962 but now its some kind of walk in centre and i beleive St Francis was amalgamated into another local parish.
My Mum and dad and right back to my great grandad were married there and its sad to see it no longer in use

The original church is still intact - I was talking to a family last week who live opposite it - the walk in community centre has constructed a shell in the interior which protects the original interior although it does hide it away.

Although a matter of opinion it's probably better in its current form than sold off to developers for conversion to flats as has happened to so many other churches. (or demolished completely as happens only too often)

My auntie still lives in Cumberland Place across the road and she goes to the new church too maybe it was her you spoke to lol.

I'm looking for information which is a bit more recent than i've seen discussed but I was just wondering if anyone could help or had any information about how I could source a picture of my gran she was the may queen for st francis in 1936 or 1937 there was a picture published in a paper at the time which she would like a copy of but so far i've had no luck any help would be appreciated

possibly The Catholic Observer as there was a photo of my brother when he was in St francis Pipe Band but that was the 60s but just a suggestion Good Luck i hope you find what youre looking for

Hello. my name is Ros and I have just joined roots chat. I saw your message of last year about looking for a photo of your Gran. I saw the reply about the Catholic Herald did you get one. There are two newspapers in Glasgow that may have also have published the picture.

Glasgow Evening Times or the Bulletin. The Evening times is still going strong but the bulletin disappeared many years ago. however archives for both are held at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. You would have to go and look at them personally though  or if you live abroad and want to get in touch please fell free to do so.

my mother-in-law was a member of St Francis all her life. She will most likely have known your Gran as also might my husband and his family.

Thanks for getting back to me, I think my mum looked through those archives at the mitchell although i'm not sure how far through she got before she started feeling sick with all the rolling pages haha
My grans name was Greta although I'm not sure how long she went to St Francis for, I'll keep hunting any info is helpful Thanks

Hi to all the folk who are looking for the St Francis information

The church records are now held in John Bosco Church in Ballater Street, Glasgow but you should contact the Archdiocese in St Andrews Cathedral in Glasgow on the Clydeside - they should be able to confirm where you will find the records you are looking for.

They have an archive department and might even have the St Francis records there.  As far as I know you can visit the department but need to make an appointment.
