First World War Pension records
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 16:20 GMT (UK) »
Need help tracing First World War pension/medical records for my grandfather George Jackson Stewart (1898-1964) who was born in Ardrishaig. Served with Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders regiment No S/32166. Had a short spell of service in France. Cannot find details in Ancestry.co.uk's British Army WWI Pension records. In 2000 managed to obtain some other information about my grandfather from records held at Kew (regiment No, service dates and medals awarded etc.). know for certain that he was hospitalised towards end of war (medical discharge 19 May 1919) and received a war pension. Puzzled why relevant records aren't on Ancestry. Would appreciate any help.

 :) Hi

I'm not certain that all the British army Pension records are up and running yet on Ancestry.  They were working through the alphabet systematically, so perhaps they have not reached the 'S' initial yet.

Someone else probably knows more on this.  :-\

Reid: Nicol: Peterhead and Aberdeen
McDonald: Greig: Milne: Aberdeenshire
Moreland: Lanarkshire, Whitehaven in Cumbria and Ireland
Cunningham: Lanarkshire, Cumbria and Ireland
Halliday: Falkirk, Stirlingshire and Ireland
Redpath: Stirlingshire and Banbridge

Think records more or less complete now. There are lots of George Stewart entries  but not one for my grandfather.

Did he re-enlist after being being pensioned out?

As to quote ancestry :-

"This database contains service records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks who were discharged from the Army and claimed disability pensions for service in WWI. These were also men who did not re-enlist in the Army prior to World War II".

Certain of my ancestors do not appear either purely for this reason.......Hope this helps

Hello to you sweetfannyadams. As far as a I know my grandfather did not re-enlist. In 1925 he took over the running of his late father's plumbing business. During WW2 (he would have been about 41 years old in 1939) he served as a special constable. Don't really think that counts as re-enlisting. Not only does he not appear in the pension records but his details do not appear in newly released medal index on Ancestry site either. I know for a fact that he was awarded 2 general service medals: the British medal and the Victory medal because my uncle still has them. Curiouser and curiouser said Alice!!

Curiouser indeed............I had a look for you & couldn't find him either....Can only conclude that the records aren't yet complete or that there is a transcript error, as there often is when using Ancestry unfortunately.............& Rgds........ to the 'White Rabbit!!'

Name 'Pension Records' is a bit misleading as they are really just copies of records that were in the hands of the Pensions department, not a full list of those who recieved pensions and in fact your man may be in the surviving WO363 service records, which Ancestry are currently uploading ( only A-C available as yet).

Medal card on Ancestry are also as not fully uploaded ( around about 50% I believe) and your man's  card appears not to be on yet, but he does appear on National Archives database of mdal cards

Medal card of  Stewart, George J
Corps: Cameron Highlanders Depot
Regiment No: S/32166
Rank: Private

Cheers for getting in touch alanh. The details from archives you forwarded me were very helpful. At least I know medals officially exist. I think I will have to bide my time r.e some of the new records on Ancestry. As for the pension records, if it s a problem with the transcribing I will have to face the fact that I may never find the relevant material.
