PATTEN Arthur Edwin
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 04:43 GMT (UK) »
Help!
I am running out of places to look for my ancestor. All I have is a name on a birth cert of my Grandfather. The cert states that Arthur was a policeman in Australia in the 1860's. I do not know where he was born, when he came to Australia or how. He did not marry the mother of my grandfather so no track of him other than a name on the cert.
If anyone can help guide me as to where I can find him, I would be etermally grateful. He is my biggest brick wall at the moment.
Thank you
Regards
Kaz

I don't mind looking but in what state do you think it was he was likely to be.  You you know where your G'father was born

Hi Robyn
Thank you for your offer to help. My grandfather, also Arthur Edwin was raised as a Jones from his step fathers name, hence my maiden name! He was born 13 May 1879 either in Fremantle or Geraldton WA to a Mary Jane Cable. Mary's brother John Cable was also a policeman in Geraldton the same time as Arthur Edwin Patten. There is a great deal of confusion relating to Arthur Sr as apparenty there was an Arthur Wenn Patten in Geraldton who is also listed as a policeman at the same time. We are hoping they are one and the same but so far no luck in proving it. So I am going with the name I have given you in the hope that something may turn up on him.
Thanks again
Kaz

Hi Kaz

I'm not related but have been asked to do some research on the Patten/Cable/Jones families.
In 1842 John PATTEN and John WENN arrived at Fremantle WA, passengers on the same ship.  Somewhere between 1845 and 1852, John PATTEN and Harriet WENN (nee ENSOR), wife of John WENN,  form a relationship together.  They dont marry but do have children between 1852-1857.  The youngest, Edgar Patten died in Geraldton 1930.
John Wenn goes off to Bunbury, starts another relationship around 1856, has another 10 children  and doesn't marry this lady  until his legal wife Harriet dies in Geraldton 1891.  John Wenn dies only a few months after the marriage.
I can find no birth for Arthur Patten BUT there is a child born in
1843 John Patten WENN to John Bailey WENN and Harriet ENSOR, then in
1845 Esther Patten WENN, no father mentionedin index  mother Harriet WENN.  Both born in Fremantle.  Esther died at 5 days old.
I can find nothing further on John born 1843.  No death, no marriage.   Could he possibly be Arthur Wenn (Edwin?) Patten.  Maybe his mother not wanting him to carry the name of her ex husband.  Maybe John Patten was his father.  Was Patten their middle name because the 2 men were good mates, or was Patten their father.
John Patten and Harriet had 4 more children, all born in Fremantle.
Is their a gate in that 'brick wall yet' and the daylight coming throrugh......

Now if only I can find something on Thomas Ishamel JONES..

regards
Melody (in  sunny Geraldton)

Hi Melody
Wow, you hae been busy, thank you. Most of that info I already had as I am in contact with one of the Patten family in G'ton. I don't know if you know of Laurel & John Hadley, she sent me a copy of her family tree which has an Arthur Patten. I don't have access to it at the moment as all packed away in storage. We are off on a 3-5yr trip around Oz, so won't be doing very much re the family tree. Only taking one folder with all relevent info in case somehing crops up. I have not included her branch till proven.
I am assuming 'our' Arthur E Patten and her Arthur Patten are one and the same as there was only one policeman of that name in the area at the time. (I'm also in touch with a Police Archivist in WAGS who says the same thing!)  Plus our gr grandmother was rumoured to be his housekeeper at the time and got pregnant to him inbetween his two marriages. My grandfather's birth cert has his father listed as Arthur E Patten, and he signed it as A E Patten, surely you would sign a legal piece of paper with your correct name? My grandfather was listed as Athur Edwin on the cert with no surname. His mother is Mary Jane Cable. She also had a brother John Cable who was also a policeman in the area at the same time...coincidence or what? Laurel says the Wenn name correct for their Arthur, so now need something showing he had a housekeeper called Mary around 1879 when my grandfather was born.
I don't know abourt a gate, but I wouild like to knock down the whole bl...y wall! And as for Thomas Ishmael Jones, I've not even gone down that road yet!
Thanks again
Much appreciated
