The Royal Garrison Artillery Plymouth
« on: Saturday 16 February 08 18:27 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather served with this division around 1900-1907.
I have found him on the 1901 Census as a patient in the "Stoke Damerel Hospital" Devonport & wonder if anyone can put me in the right direction to see if I could possibly obtain any army records for him.
My Grandfather's  name was John James Best born in 1877 in Bingham Nottinghamshire.
He was a reservist for the Royal Garrison Artillery & was called up in 1914 & fought in the first world war.He died in 1926 in Sheffield.

Hi,
Yes I am an Ancestry member & have got the paperwork you mention, but it is only First World War
Records. My Grandfather was serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery around 1900 & it was these records that I would love to find.He left the Army but was still listed as a Reservist & was called up in 1914.
On my Uncles Birth Certificate in 1902 he was a "Servant to an Army Officer" & on my Fathers birth certificate in 1904 he was a "Gunner  in the Royal Garrison Artillery".
I would also love to know what he was in a Military Hospital for in 1901 at Devonport , but I suppose I will never know about this.

Hi

I can only give you help about the Military Hospital at Devonport, it is now a boys school and is situated near to Stoke Damerell Church
