Aaaarrrrrggggghhhhh - still searching.........
« on: Friday 15 February 08 10:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Looking for help on a birth please
Sarah Fisher
On 1841 census her age is listed as 63 no birth place
On 1851 census her age is listed as 72 birthplace Throckley Fell
This would make her birth year approx 1778???
She died between 1861 and 1871 any help  there would be good to.

On IGI there is a Sarah Fisher born 1779 Chillingham, is this near Throckley or not....................

She is the 2nd wife of my 5x gggrandfather Samuel Ord, they married in 1818 at St Bartholomew Longbenton

I have been on this strain of my tree for 3 years or more and have just decided to come back to follow it up.    Aaaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!!!

Any help would be appreciated
Regards

Hi Princess1

Is it possible that Sarah was a widow when she married Samuel Ord? Have you got the full parish records of the marriage which may state that she was a widow?

If so, there is a record for a Sarah Scott marrying a Robert Fisher in Longbenton in 1799, and also a baptism record for a Sarah Scott in Heddon on the Wall in 1778.

Heddon on the Wall is very close to Throckley, so it could be a possibility.

The number of widows who have helpfully hindered my research over the years by not being the person I initially thought them to be is staggering!

The BT's for that marriage of Samuel Ord and Sarah Fisher don't say bachelor or widower, nor does it say on any other marriage.

You say she died between 61 and 71 but don't mention what it says on the 61 census, was it 61-71 or 51-61?

Hi all
Thanks for all the help & replies re Sarah Fisher, I have all the relevant marriage information, but what I don't have is any information on her birth.  Am I reading your info correct when you say that if she was widowed when she married samuel on 25/5/1818 then surname Fisher may not be her maiden (nee) name.  Was it common to re-marry using a widowed name (i have no idea about such complicated policies of the day).  If this is so what a total bummer.

Madpants, on the 1861 census it says that she was 83 and born in Throckley.
She is not on the 1871 census only Samuel who was "inmate" at the South Shields Union Workhouse (sad).

Does this help at all..............

Widow's generally remarried using their first married name but their maiden name should also be on the certificate....I say should because i have one that married using her first married name, gave her father the same surname and said she was a spinster!  Her subsequent childrens birth certs gave her maiden name too.

On the 1861 census they are living in Moorsley, which is in the Houghton registration district.

Between 1861 and 1871 there is only one Sarah Ord death in that district, unfortunately just before ages were put on the indexes!

Sarah Ord
June Q 1864
Houghton 10a 200

If you order the certificate from Durham registrars

www.durham.gov.uk   (online services)

unfortunately that years deaths are not searchable online, but the name and quarter should do it for the form, if you specify things to make sure it's the right one it shouldn't cost you anything, unlike the GRO who charge about £3 if it's the wrong one.

In my tree I have Sarah Scott, bapt 20 May 1778 at Heddon on the wall (in 1800 given of Stamfordham), daughter of James Scott & Sarah Welsh of Ryton Durham. She married Robert Fisher in 1799 but he died 2 April 1812. By then they had 7 children (6 I believe surviving) so Sarah would have needed financial help. I have a marriage to Samuel Ord but not until 1818, and I cannot be certain that this is the same Sarah.
I hope this may be of some use.
