Farrell - Where are they buried
« on: Friday 15 February 08 09:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello there. I am doing my family tree (Baxter & Farrell). I am the only member of my family born in Australia, which makes it difficult to visit actual places.

Most of my immediate family came from Motherwell & Wishaw. I have hit a brick wall with my Great Great Grandparents. My GGGrandmother lived and died in Motherwell. My problem is I cannot find any trace of my GGGrandfather beyond the 1901 census. My thought is that my GGGrandmothers headstone may hold some vital clues, she died in 1948. Could anyone give some advice on perhaps  how to find out where they were buried (I have a death certificate). Any advise would be very much appreciated as I do not have any known relatives that I am aware of in the area to help.

Baxter: Lanarkshire, Slamannan
Jordan: Lanarkshire, Staffordshire
McFarlane: Lanarkshire
Mitchell: Ireland to Scotland, Canada & New Zealand
Farrell: Lanarkshire, Ireland, New York
Fagan: Lanarkshire, Ireland
Hogg: Lanarkshire, Ireland

Hi Drop Bear,

Welcome to Roots Chat, I have no doubt some of the Roots Chatters in Lanarkshire will be able to assist you. If you give full names, this can help. Also, if you have death certificate can you give address etc. Good luck withyour search.

Tom

Thank you Tom,

My GGGrandmothers name is Mary Farrell, widow of Peter Farrell. She died 13th July, 1948 aged 70 at 29 Hetherwood Road, Motherwell. Her father was Edward Fagan & her mother was Bridget Smith. Her death was registered in Motherwell 30th July, 1948 by her son Patrick.

Regards,
Liz

If she died in Motherwell,  I'd say she was most probably buried in Airbles Cemetery.

You can try emailing the Cemetery Admin Assistant
Grounds Maintenance, Burial Grounds and Cemeteries, giving details of name, place and date of death, they are usually very helpful.

Probably will be Airbles Cemetery but possibly St Patricks RC cemetery.

I think the address should be Netherwood Road which is in the Muirhouse area of Motherwell

Their marriage record from SP shows that they married in the RC Cathedral in Motherwell on 2 Jan 1900. Peter was 22 and Mary 21

Mary's parents were Edward Fagan and Bridget Smith (dec)

Peters parents were Patrick Farrell and Ann ????????

Witnesses were Anthony Farrell and Bridget Fagan

Thank you all very much for your help. I don't feel so alone now when someone else helps. I will contact Airbles Cemetery Admin immediately. I do have the marriage certificate, death certificate and 1901 census. I need to find out what happened to Peter Farrell that is why I thought Mary's headstone might have a clue. Family rumour has it that he went to New York and was murdered on the Staton ISland Ferry. He was supposedly cremated there and his ashes sent back to Mary in Motherwell. He was alive in 1923 when his eldest daughter Bridget married, but was deceaased in 1935. My thought is to work with the information I do have and see where that leads me.
Again, thank you all :)  :)

Unless I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, I have been trying for seven years. I even wrote to the New York City Police Commssioner and got I lovely letter back saying they would be glad to help, but need more information. The problems I ran into were that there a lots & lots & lots of Farrells that went to America. I have tried the Ellis Island records with no matches. I do believe that there is always one in every family that no-one knows anything about and that's always the one that we want to know about. I have no idea why he went over there. I do know that he was Irish and he was a booky, so he was probably up to something dodgy. But then again I am only going on family heresay.>:( ???
