Dartford Union Workhouse, Kent
« on: Friday 15 February 08 08:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I was interested to know if anyone else has any more in depth info on the Dartford Union Workhouse.
I found a relative WILLIAM ROE there in the 1901 census. I looked on google where I just found some general info about what life was like and some pictures, but how would I find out how long he was there or if there were records of him specifically?

thanks in anticipation,
LittleLondoner  :)

According to the excellent workhouse website

 http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

records are at the Centre for Kentish Studies, Maidstone and include:

Guardians' minutes (1836-1930); Births (1898-1929); Deaths (1914-30); Creed registers (1869-1930); Register of lunatics (1891-1932); Punishments book (1914-1944)

You are unlikely to be allowed acces to records less than 100 years old.

one of my rellies was there on 1851 cenus.Presumably because his parents had died. He was discharge shortly after the census at the request of his grandmother.

Hi Gloryer,

That's interesting - have you managed to find out any more about him while he was there?

Does anyone know where an inmate of the Dartford Workhouse would be buried please? I have searched burial records for Holy Trinity and Churches in Stone, Greenhithe & Swanscombe with no luck.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

You could try the Way of Death Project which has scans of the burial records for East Hill, Swanscombe and Stone cemeteries
