To cut out the confusion as to which office this record is at, it would help if you put the city name in the title.
You might get somewhere then.
If it's urgent, you always have the option of contacting Archives direct....

Bren.

Hi again pixie6,

Land claim of Private John RYAN late of the 65th Regiment.
Decision: Rejected. Already received land for service in the Waikato Militia.

Details provided in Application:
Discharged: 28 April 1863
Length of service: 12 years
Period of service: 21 Jan 1851 – 28 Apr 1863
Months actually engaged against the Queens enemies: about 24 months
Present address: care of M. LORD Innkeeper Henderson
Certificate of Good Conduct on retirement: Character Indifferent reported by Horse Guards
Signature of John (his X mark) Ryan

In a précis of a letter to the Crown Land Commissioner Auckland dated 20 September 1889, John RYAN stated that:
He was in 10 Company 65th Regiment (under) Captain MACGREGOR and his service number was 2861. He enlisted in Ireland on 20 January 1851 and was discharged at Otahuhu in January 1862.
His discharge papers were destroyed in his whare by a bush fire at Coromandel in 1865.
He was in engagement under Col. GOULD on 17 March 1860 at Taranaki and also in engagement under Col. GOULD in operation at Manutahi and at Koru in the same year.

In an application dated 22 August 1893 John RYAN stated that he fired the first shot on 17 March 1860 at Taranaki under Col. Gould. Twelve months from that date he cut down the Native Flag at Thompson Pa. He was alongside Mr. MCNAUGHTON the day he (MCNAUGHTON) was shot.
