Elizabeth Jones b.Lowick 1873
« on: Thursday 14 February 08 20:46 GMT (UK) »
Researching my family tree and need to know more about my grandmother Elizabeth Jones born at Lowick in 1873.   All I know for sure is that she had 5 illegitimate children, my late father being the 4th, but he always insisted he never knew who his and his siblings father was.
He had the curious name John Bernard Coward Jones and as Coward was/is quite a common name in the Lowick area I wonder if that might have been a clue to his father's identity.
There was a Bernard Coward living in Lowick in 1901 age 21.
In 1901 Elizabeth was living at Lowick with her three oldest children and her father John Jones born Millom 1841.
As Jones family relatives are now thin on the ground I am at a loss as to how to continue my quest so if there is anyone out there who may have any snippet of information they think might help I would be glad to hear it... or if anyone can give me any idea of how to proceed.

Hi BeeP

Welcome to Rootschat!   :)

I don't suppose your father's birth cert gives a name for his father? That would be too easy! Do you have birth certs for any of his other siblings?

Hi Barbara

Sorry... I went offline the other evening straight after I put my message on and just got back here now.

No I don't have my dad's birth certificate nor have I seen any of his siblings cert's but I doubt there would be anything there to help.  My cousin, the son of dad's older brother, told me none of the children knew who their father was but I suppose there is just a chance that's not the case.. I only have his word for it.  I am going to try and get my dad's birth cert off my estranged brother but if he wont let me have it then I will have to purchase a copy which for me is quite expensive... and then to get all his siblings cert's would be more than I could afford right away.  But it's certainly a good idea  :)
Thanks for sending those census's read-outs... I hadn't seen the 1891 info... which tells me there was another son, William, whom I hadn't known about.
I really am very grateful for your reply.
B

Hi B,

I wasn't suggesting that you bought all those certificates (at £7 each!), just wondered if you had your father's. Do you need any earlier census?

Hi.. sorry for delay in replying.
No I have info from all censuses thanks.
Sadly I don't have my dad's birth cert... my estranged brother holds it!
I will consider purchasing I think... I believed them to be about £30 to buy not £7... that seems much more reasonable.
Thanks for all your help :)

Hi B,

Here's the link to the online GRO site for certificate ordering:
 www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

or you can order direct from the local register office if you know where the birth was registered.

Hi Barbara

I'm Barbara too btw!  :D

Thanks for the info... very much obliged.

One particular thing is I couldn't locate Elizabeth Jones on the 1891 census when presumably she had moved away from home, perhaps gone into service.  I don't have unlimited access to the censuses anywhere as yet so haven't been able to search for her... it may or may not help me to know where she was and what she was doing in that period of time.

When you order a birth cert do you have to pay extra for the full version only the short version wouldn't tell you much would it?

Barbara

Hi Barbara,

The birth cert you order will be the full one!  It should show date of birth, address, name of mother, and name and occupation of father - which probably won't be shown in this case of course.

Sorry too many Elizabeths in 1891 to be sure which is the right one.
