I am with oldtimer - a reticule. That's not to say I didn't think the other ideas were wonderful  ;D ;D

OK ...  looked up 'reticule' .... that's what I said before  :P ...

So what's inside it ?  ..... could it be a haggis ?  ;D

The darkish mark (removed from my restore) ... I wonder if it could be a pompom type thing to fasten it (ie go through a loop)

Hi Brenda...1864 is probably about right, maybe a little earlier as the hairstyle is still fully covering the ears...we don't know how stylish this lady was in hair preferences :D
