Ruth EADE of Framfield
« on: Monday 11 February 08 07:13 GMT (UK) »
While in New Zealand a year ago we found in a museum a sampler worked by Ruth Eade of Framfield School, aged 12, dated 1839. There is no Framfield in New Zealand so the museum staff thought it must be from the English Framfield. The 1861 census shows a Ruth Eade of the right age,and she seems to have married Mr Ware of Uckfield who owned the brickworks in Newtown. However we can't find any NZ connection so far. Does this ring bells with anyone?

;D This looks like a Rootschat challenge  ;D  Why not post it on the Common Room page & see if they rise to the challenge (if it's of interest to you or the museum that is)
I & other Rootschatters did something similar a few years back with another sampler that had been found on a rubbish tip in NZ.  We were able to trace the life & times of the little girl who had made it & even linked-up with descendants...lots of fun & very rewarding!

Hi
I cannot find a Ruth Eade/Ede born at the right time in Framfield on the 1851 census which seems odd.  There is a Ruth Ede working as a Female Servant in Brighton in 1841 who could be the right one.  There is a younger Ruth in Framfield in 1851 and 1841 so we will have to be careful not to confuse the two.  Of course it is always possible that this Ruth was married before 1851.       Hmm...   Interesting.  Anyone got access to Framfield parish register?

I couldn't resist  ;D
A Ruth Eade & a Benjamin Ware share the same page for a marriage, Q1 1863, Uckfield (2b 119)
They appear on the 1871 census (not 1861 as you state) RG10/1053/45/22 at Uckfield.  Benjamin is an Innkeeper & brickmaker.  Ruth is his second wife as Benjamin appears on the 1861 census at the same address, New Inn, Ridgewood, Uckfield with wife Ann.

Had the same problem as you Sillgen with the earlier censuses.  She doesn't appear on the IGI either  :(  Going by the sampler her birth date would have been about 1827.

Which museum in NZ was the sampler in. There are EADEs here in NZ locally but they were from London. There are WAREs here as well, locally, not sure where they were from though.

The museum was the Kauri Museum at Matakohe 0593, Northland.  They have a website at www.kaurimuseum.com.
