If anyone has access to the prs for Burton Pidsea I would be grateful if they could look for the marriage of

Luke ABBAY & Elizabeth RHOYDHOUSE 31 Dec 1812

am hoping the prs may include names of witnesses and parishes of the bride and groom

also burials of any children belonging to Luke twixt 1811 and 1830

Hi Myfi,

I checked this out at the RO this morning as promised:

Burton Pidsea  31 Dec 1812

Luke Abbay, widower otp & Elizabeth *Rhoydhouse of Burstwick  married by licence.

Luke signed, Elizabeth made her mark.

Witnesses: Ann Thompson, William Dibney (latter is a regular witness)

I couldn't find any Abbay/Abbey burials in Burton Pidsea between 1812 and 1835.

[ *I'm only reproducing the surname as Rhoydhouse because that's what you said it was! (IGI?). To be honest, it definetly ended in 'house' but it could have been anything - I made a note 'Ploughouse??'].

I've just had a quick look in my Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames - neither are in!!

Jill

HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Thank you so much Jill  ;D

Excellent, it confirms my suspicion that Luke was a widower when he married Elizabeth whatsit house.

Had found a marriage for him in Bubwith in 1809 (IGI)....so first wife must be buried there....guess where the prs are???... the Borthwick...yet again!

Shame no Abbe(a)y's were witnesses, wonder who Ann Thompson was.

no burials....means he probably took all his children with him to the States.

really appreciated
Myfi

Strangely enough, there appear to be some Roydhouse/Roodhouse entries in the IGI. I never fail to be amazed at some of the surnames I've come across since I've been doing FH!!  ::)

As the 1812 marriage entry didn't say whether Elizabeth was a spinster or a widow, but did say that Luke was a widower, it's probably a safe bet to deduce that she was a spinster.

Have you seen this IGI entry:

1782 Hedon born 2 Sep/bap 3 Sep  Betty d/o Daniel John Roydhouse & Ann?

That would make her 30 when she married Luke - how old was he? Did they have any children called Daniel, John or Ann?

Hi  Jill

Thankyou for looking for Elizabeth's baptism

Their children were Elizabeth1813, Matthew1814, Mark1816 and Rebecca1819 all bapt Burton Pidsea (IGI), unfortunately no naming pattern with the one you found.

Luke was bapt 1787 in Brayton (IGI) surname ABBA

Haven't yet found what year they went to the States, but Luke
was in New Jersey with a wife and 6 children on the 1830 census (no wive's or children's names given)...Elizabeth died either on the voyage or not long after as he then married a Hannah Mills of New Jersey.

thanks again

I suppose poor Elizabeth would have to go some to pack in 6 children after the age of 30, but it's such an unusual name and Hedon is so near Burton Pidsea that I feel the connection must be to that family. Perhaps she was a widow after all and had previously married one of the Hedon Roydhouses?

Me and my theories!!  ::) :-[
