GRIFFIN - Stilton
« on: Friday 08 February 08 06:30 GMT (UK) »
G'day,

I've traced my Dad's family back to Stilton, and the 1841 census shows a Robert Griffin (40) with wife Elizabeth (35) and child Thomas (10). They lived in Fen Street.

Two questions have arisen:

1. Where do I go from here, especially in regards to getting info further back?

2. Am I likely to be still related to the Griffins currently living in Stilton?

It's such a pain living so far away from all those records  . . .

Cheers all,
Trisha

Most of us live "so far away from all those records"! Fortunately microfilms of many of those records can be viewed at your nearest LDS Family History Centre - a full list of Centres in Australia can be found at www.familysearch.org.

But Hunts is not the easiest county to research as the LDS was refused permission to film many parish registers, so these can only be viewed at Huntingdon Records Office (who also provide a research service at very reasonable cost for those like us who don't live within easy travelling distance of Huntingdon). Unfortunately Stilton and Yaxley are two such parishes whose parish registers have not been filmed.

Whilst you do not mention if and how you're connected to the Griffens in Stilton in 1841, in answer to your questions

1. You go back generation by generation using parish registers, where baptisms, marriages, and burials are recorded.

2. If you mean Griffens living in Stilton today, it's possible, but who knows?

Hunts Marriage Index has a marriage in 1827 at Stilton between Robert Griffen and Elizabeth Ruff, both of the parish of Stilton.

Living in Yaxley in 1841 were James and Sarah Griffen, 58 and 60 respectively, who are just about old enough to have been Robert's parents. But there's also a marriage in Yaxley in 1792 between Robert Griffen and Sarah Wells. It needs a check to be done of Yaxley parish register to find Robert's baptism c1800/1 to find out who his parents were. This information can only come from Huntingdon Records Office as mentioned above

Regards

David, also living so far away in France

My thanks to both of you!

Sorry, wasn't trying to sound like I was whingeing about the records - it's just that I know I can only go so far using the Internet, rather than the excitement of a physical chase.

How I believe I'm related:

Father - Billie Grenfell Griffin born in Beverley (1916) of Ernest Griffin and Alice Beatrice Griffin (nee Proctor)

Grandfather - Ernest Griffin born Walkington (1887) of John Griffin born in Denton and Elizabeth Griffin (nee Richardson) (born in Beverley)

Great Grandfather - checked 1861 census and followed John to Old Farm House in Stilton, where his parents were Thomas Griffin (born in Stilton) and Anne (?) (born in Deeping St James)

Great-Great Grandfather - checked 1841 census and followed Thomas to Fen Street in Stilton, where his parents were Robert Griffin (born in Stilton) and Elizabeth (?) (born in Stilton). Your mention of Robert Griffin marrying Elizabeth Ruff fits in with the census that has a 15yo John Ruff living at the same address.

Thanks for the advice, and I'll continue my hunt for identity!

Cheers,
Trisha

Hi Trisha

As Wozzle mentioned, in 1841 both Robert and Sarah were shown merely as born in Huntingdonshire, not in Stilton. In 1851 though, Robert is shown as born at Yaxley, Hunts, and Sarah as born at Stilton

To trace Robert you need to be looking at Yaxley parish register

David

Note, often overlooked;  the Hunts Family History Society provide microfiche of a number of Hunts parishes.

Hi Oz

Just as a matter of interest, your GGrandfather John Griffin was my Grandfather William's brother. No I have got no further than you in my research.
