Market Deeping Marriage-Topham 1837
« on: Thursday 07 February 08 12:22 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage in Market Deeping between Robert Topham and Elizabeth Burbidge. It took place in January 1837 and I would like to find out the parents of Elizabeth.
Roberts parents are Robert Topham and Elizabeth ???? but I have no idea who the parents of Elizabeth Burbidge are.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Civil Registration started later in 1837, so the marriage register wouldn't normally be expected to show fathers' names :(

I can't spot them in 1851 (birthplaces can be useful).
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Hello Geoff,

Was hopefull someone may have access to Market Deeping parish registers. I don't live nearby or I would check them for myself, have searched the internet but no luck.
They were both dead before the 1851 census which is why they aren't listed. Robert died in 1844 and Elizabeth 1848 (not confirmed).

Thanks for looking,
John

I dont think parish registers usually give the parents, just the witnesses.

The Robert who died in 1844 was buried 27 August at Algarkirk aged 40

Elizabeth?  29 May 1850 at Bourne aged 39

Father Robert buried at Deeping St Nicholas 26 July 1860 aged 96

Geoff and Liz,

Thanks for your efforts to help me out with this. In particular Geoff for the burial of Elizabeth in 1850. Bourne makes sense as relatives lived there.

John

Hi John,
I'm very interested in this family. I believe that Elizabeth was Elizabeth baptised 4 Dec 1820 in Northborough dr of James and Mary Burbidge, and that this couple were James Burbage of Glinton and Mary King of Northborough married 24 March 1812 at Northborough. Northborough being just over the county border in Northants (though now Cambridgeshire). Mary's father, William King left a will in 1841 (in Northampton record office) which included a bequest to "my granddaughter Elizabeth Topham, the wife of Robert Topham of Alderchurch".  I think this must be a misspelling of Algarkirk where Robert and Elizabeth were living at the time.
Also Elizabeth Topham died 21 March 1848 according to papers about some copyhold land in Northborough belonging to William King which are at Lincolnshire Archives (ref. HD45/27). Unfortunately it doesn't say where she died and I haven't found a burial record for her yet.
Peter

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the further information. It has helped me solve a few puzzles. Everything you say does make sense. I am descended through Roberts son Robert William King Topham so it explains his rather long winded name. The names you gave also led me to find out the connection between the Tophams and the Haynes, and also why some Burbidges are with a Hannah Parrish in Deeping in 1851.
If you have any other info, would love to here from you as they do seem quite a complicated family. I see there was a thread about the Tophams in March last year which has plenty of info. I didn't contribute though as I am quite new to genealogy.
Regards,
John
