Marriage certificate of George and Narah has arrived! Newport 1874.
George is a batchelor! Occupation - Bricklayer. Father John Hodgkinson (Coal Miner)
Slightly confused now, I was convinced George had 2 marriages.
Has he lied? Was 1871 Hodgkins family an amazing coincidence?
Any thoughts?

Hi

The 1861 entry and the 1871 entry are the same family. They are just spelt differently.

Given that his father was John & a coal miner which ties up with those entries - I'm sure it's the right parents

I can't find George in 1871 - I've tried both the Welsh and English 1871 but no luck

His Wife Narah is also missing in 1871. I can't find her anywhere. She is living with parents Caroline and James in 1861.
Interestingly in 1881 Caroline is remarried (James died in 1864) to John Key (Rey). She is living in Newport (341 Watery Lane). There is a grandchild called George Hodgkinson b. about 1870, but no parents. Could this be a child of George and Narah from before they were married? If so where are they? My brain is beginning to hurt so if anyone can help point me in the right direction it would be great.

Hello:

Just a thought could Narah be written as Sarah on the census records? There is a lot of mispelt names on the census records. have a few in my family.
My grandmother's maiden name is Hotchkiss and it comes spelt many different was included Hodgkinson or Hodgekiss.  so don;t let the spelling for names put you off.

Cheers

It is possible that George and Narah are living together in 1871 as Fordgw and Sarah Hodgkinson even though they don't marry until 1874. Their children Harriet and George (Fordgw) turn up in 1881, Harriet with George and Narah, George with Grandma Caroline. It definitely looks like Sarah on census though. Still it explains why George is not widowed on marriage cert, and why George and Narah otherwise disappear in 1871.
Good thinking!
