St Rollox? Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 00:37 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if there is a St Rollox in Glasgow, as I can't find it on a map.

From a 1901 census, one of our fellow forumees informs me of the family I am trying to trace, they resided in Foundry pl, St Rollox.

Also, it would be very helpful if anyone can find a birth/baptism of Janet Stewart, b. 1898 of the approx. area to John and Mary Stewart.

Cheers

Hi there

Yes there was a registration district named St. Rollox.  As far as I know it existed from 1875 to 1906 as registration district 644/06.  It then morphed into  644/08  from 1907 to 1934.  After that it must have been consumed by another district or assumed a new name...not really sure.

The wiki has this to say about the burgh of St. Rollox...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_St._Rollox_%28UK_Parliament_constituency%29

The valuation maps from the Glasgow Story website show St. Rollox in Ward 8...

Hope this helps a bit...

Best wishes
Jean

I was just typing up the same wiki link as Jean  ;D

St Rollox  is/was in The Barony area of Glasgow - and according to GENUKI,  Barony itself is now hard to locate on a map , due to having been swallowed up by the city of Glasgow........so I imagine, it's bit like  the cat that swallowed the bird that swallowed the fly.....St Rollox got 'hidden' in the same manner?

Monica

Thanks for the link - I will find it very useful. I've been following this thread because I'm from Glasgow but I don't know the city and its geography as well as I should. Not my fault, my parents dragged me south when I was 7, and I've been in England so long I'm afraid I've gone native!

ST. Rollox still exists in Glasgow although the name lives on only in the industrial estate
