     This might interest you Gisele - go to old-maps.co.uk and follow the links to Marden. There you'll find New House Farm just to the east of the village. The maps are 1895 and 1905 and the farm looks like a very substantial property in those times.
     Furthermore, on current O/S maps the name is the same.

Hello all! I too have relatives who lived in Marden in the 19th century, and I'd love to know more; my great-great-great-grandfather's eldest brother William Vickress was listed as living in Marden in 1861, in the DOWER HOUSE; his wife Mary was living there, as was his younger sister Milborough, and Mary's niece Hannah (who later married William's youngest brother Alfred).

In 1881 William had already passed but his brother Alfred is living in Lilmarsh (??) with his wife Hannah and their two young children.

These are the dates they all passed away; is there any chance there's a family plot or a headstone with their name?
William Vickress, died 1870.
Mary Vickress, née Orchard died 1883.
Alfred Vickress, died 1900.
Hannah Vickress, née Orchard died 1915.

Alfred and Hanna's daughter Sarah died in 1963 having married a man called Walwyn; they also died in Marden, so they might be buried there. As far as I know,the men in the family were carpenters and farmers. Sarah's elder brother William was murdered in Hereford in 1927, but would there be any mention of this in Marden at all, be it in a local gazette or other?

Hi cimbrio, if it helps your research, in 1881 Alfred was probably living in Litmarsh with a t not an l. It's a small area just next to Marden to the NE.
You say Sarah married a man called Walwyn, was that his first name or his surname?
If you want to find out more about poor old William's story the main local paper is The Hereford Times, it would certainly have covered that event. Also you could try the Court archives as there would have been a trial if the culprit was apprehended, and, in those days, a hanging!

Yes, Litmarsh is correct, I found it after writing my post. Sarah's husband was called Arthur John Walwyn, he died in 1939; they had a daughter who I think is married and still alive though over 90.

How could I get hold of a copy of The Hereford Times copy of the day following the murder, or any way of someone checking it for me? There was an inquest after the murder, but tragically the murdered pulled the gun on himself and died; he had previously tried to kill one of William's daughters too!).

Do you know if the graves of any of the above-mentioned could be foudn in Marden churchyard?

Thanks RedMike, I'm afraid it was I who started that thread as well; some posts did cover parts of the Vickress family but the original thread was not related, I think the ramifications just got out of hand.

I know we shouldn't "repeat" topics although the Marden side of the family has hardly been dealt with at all
