Seeking pictures of Home Farm, Bold Hall, Sutton
« on: Monday 04 February 08 15:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm trying to locate pictures/images of Home Farm.
One of my ancestors (Agnes Houghton) is on the 1901 census, she is a farmer living at Home Farm, Bold Hall, Sutton.
I've been on the Sutton/St Helens website, which says that Home Farm, Sherdley Hall and Sherdley Park were sold to St Helens Corporation in 1949 (Sherdley Hall was then demolished due to subsidence)
I've also located a map of the area showing were Home Farm was.
Does anyone know where else I could try?
Thanks
Sueky

Don't know if this is the same place or merely nearby - if you go to www.imagesofengland.org.uk and search for Sherdley Hall Farmhouse it has a photograph and further information about the building.

Thank you Richard and Genechaser for the images - they're both beautiful places, unfortunately I don't think either of them are mine.

The map I found showing Home Farm is on the Bold Parish Council website. It's shown as being located next to Clock Face Country Park, but close by to Sherdley Park. I can't see a date for the map though.

Thanks again
Sueky :)

Hello Sueky

The map on the Bold Parish Council website is actually modern - it's dated 2006.  The Royal Mail has a modern address for the property as:
Home Farm, Hall Lane, Bold, St Helens, WA9 4SJ
suggesting it's still there.  I also note on the Bold Parish Council has a list of 'buildings of special architectural and historic interest' includes Farm House at former Bold Hall Estate, Hall Lane and Farm Buildings, formerly the stables, at Bold Hall.

Also, the St Helen's Council website has a planning application:
http://212.248.225.150:8080/portal/servlets/ApplicationSearchServlet?PKID=13875
from 2002 for the conversion of the farmhouse at Home Farm into two flats and the stables and other outbuildings into houses.  If you contact St Helen's Council they should be able to show you the plans that were submitted, which will probably include a plan showing the internal layout and elevations as existing at the time the application was made.

If you want to see an old map, try www.old-maps.co.uk and enter the co-ordinates 354600 / 391800 - this has a number of maps of the area ranging from 1849 to 1927.

Going back to www.imagesofengland.org.uk if you do a search for Bold Old Hall there are two listed buildings - the gateposts and a bridge of the original building - but if you look in the background of the picture of the gateposts there are clearly some farm buildings - possibly part of Home Farm?

Richard

Wow, Richard. Thank you so much for taking the time to help on this one.

The map co-ordinates are great. Looking at the maps shown they appear to resemble the Bold Parish Council map except Bold Hall is shown instead of Home Farm.
I agree the image of Bold Old Hall Gateposts does show farmyard/out buildings in the back ground - and these may be the buildings referred to in the Planning Application.
It was a good idea to suggest contacting them about the plans submitted - I'd have never have thought of that!

I actually only live about 20mins from St Helens, so I could even take a trip over there. It's quite strange really to think that I'm so close to where they lived.

Thanks again for all your help - it's much appreciated.
Sueky

I would suggest you also pay a visit to the reference room in the main library. Most of them have books on Halls and mansions, there are other smaller ones or, donated single drawing/painting of various other smaller building.which no one knows they have because they are usually kept under the counter in a box waiting to be cataloged.I searched my library for any reference of a well known local mans House of which the name i knew of:)early 1900 i think? for months. On the way out feeling very disappointed i casually asked "I don't suppose you have and Pictures of " she got a tatty box from behind the counter and after a rumage ,produced a photocopy of the house.I found the book it came from so took a photo copiy from that because mine was better ;D
so as i always say "if you don't ask you don't get" ;D
Now i ask before i seach :)

As far as I know the farm is still there I used to teach the children from Home farm. I can give you directions but don't know if you can get down to it. There are 3 farms down the lane and you used to have to go through a series of gates.

How interesting Annie.  8)
Was Home Farm part of the Bold Hall Estate? and if so, would the farm have been owned by the occupiers or leased from the Estate?
How long ago did you teach? Were you a private tutor?

Sorry to bombard you with questions  :)
