Here is an old photo of Catherine Wagstaff and two of her daughters - not sure of the year.

Found out more on the photo! It was taken in Bristol Road coventry at Rhoda Jane's house. Catherine is the one seated and standing is Rhoda Jane and her daughter Florence Emily (b 1902). It was taken c.1920.

I would love to have copies of the census! Would you mind if i gave you my addess and you posted them to me? My photo copier appears to be playing up at the moment

Sue,

I will post them to you if you wish. Don't post  your address though as the mods will delete it. Send it to me via Personal Message.

Note that these are transcripts and not copies of the original censuses. All the info is there though.

Glad you managed to put up the photo!
regards
Leofric

Nevis, you didn't come back to me, so I've decided to post them here for you. Note that the spellings of some names and also the relationships in the 1861 look wrong to me. Perhaps the enumerator was having a bad day! There is no such place as Haislering for instance!

Good morning/afternoon/evening

As its my first post, please forgive any unintentional breech of etiquette!

To introduce myself - my GG Grandfather was William Wagstaff of 1776 and  then came Elijah of 1836, Harry of 1869 and finally Frank of 1904.

Real good to see that I'm not alone in terms of Wagstaffs ;)

I've found quite a few details of William and his second wife but, until I read the earlier posts) was quite unaware of his first wife and , of course,  their subsequent descendants.

I'm still in Coventry - and was bought up only a matter of a mile or two of where most of the family of watchmakers and ribbon weavers lived.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who would help me increase my knowledge of the family history.

Thanks.

Hello Viv,

and welcome to Rootschat!

I too was unaware of Wm Wagstaff's first wife, although due to the disparity in age between him and his 2nd wife Elizabeth I suspected he may have been married before.

My wife is connected to the Wagstaffs by William's daughter Caroline (born about 1837/8 but no birth registered that I can find). She married John Foster in Cov Register Office on 22/7/1862. She was 3 years younger than Elijah.

In the 1851 census Caroline is missing from the Wagstaff census of that year, but there is a Caroline Wagstaff living with the family of John Suddens, a watchmaker, in Spon St and shown as his neice, so there must be a relationship there though I haven't proved it yet.

You are welcome to any info I have on the Wagstaffs, though I don't think I have much more than posted on this topic.
But I'd be glad to help you if you state what you are looking for.

regards
Leofric

Thanks for the welcome, Leofric

I found Caroline on the 1841 census - at Fleet Street. I think you're right about her living with another family. It seems quite common. Two children in my family from Broomfield Place were farmed out in the local pub!

It must have been cramped to say the least in the many Courts in the watchmaking district. Even I can remember - just before the Ring Road came - that the houses were tiny.

I don't need to look (yet) but are the Registry Office details easily available? Or did you have to go down the marriage certificate route?

Still very new to the ancestry game and learning all the time.....
