Could Someone Date This Please?

This is something to do with Working Mens Clubs (CIU), and convalescent homes.

I'd really appreciate ideas and guesses at the date.

I would have thought wartime, but then I spotted a woman in a light-coloured coat, half-hidden behind a man in the front row. The collar of the coat has a dark strip of decoration on it, likely velvet, and there was some discussion on this style recently. Along with the wideness of the collars visible, I'm thinking maybe about 1950 or so, because as old rowley, our very knowlegeable expert at dating by clothing points out, cloth rationing was in effect until 1949.

You may get some other opinions...

I'd say that it was late 1930s-40s from the style of dress.

Pegwell, Langland and Saltburn are confusing me though. It should be Co Durham/Newcastle  but

Hi Gadget,

The relative concerned would have been from the Wakefield area. I don't know who it is, but hope to narrow it down by the date. Certainly, Pegwell and Langland are a long way away. Langland is up for sale and it was previously a convalescent home for steelworkers and coal miners.

It came from my wife's mothers papers, with unmarked pictures from 1860-1960! With help from rootschatters and current research I have managed to identify quite a few anonymous subjects.

Mmmm, wouldn't you like to post some of those early, early ones for restoration, Nigel? Just to make sure of the dating, as well...? Wouldn't that be nice, Nigel?

As far as the banner is concerned - I suggest that the CIU possibly had four nursing/convalescent homes - Saltburn, Pegwell, Langland and ??, celebrated on the banner.
They definitely had one at Pegwell Bay, http://www.passmoreedwards.org.uk/pages/Hospitals/Pegwell%20Bay.htm and at Saltburn, formerly the Zetland Hotel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltburn

Thanks for the links, it sounds like these homes offered 2 week subsidised 'holidays' for members of Working Mens Clubs. My wife's grandfather (George Aston 1881-1960)being from Streethouse near Wakefield probably went to Saltburn - and I guess that is where this photo was taken? On careful inspection, she has identified her grandfather and grandmother on the photograph - second row back on the left end. So, I think that would suggest a date of 1946-1959 - probably around 1950.

i only just joined rootschat but found this photograph, i have the full one and even knew some of the people, it is Streethouse Working Mens Club. some names off the top of my head Aston, Goldby, King, Harper. btw Astons ran a fish and chip shop 1920's maybe. I was standing where that was located only this morning, Saltburn is correct
