Just joined Rootschat so hi to all my (apparent!) new relations.

My Great Grandfather John Barnett (dob 20/3/1827, Kilspindie, Perthshire) married Christian McAra (born about 1832) at Monzie Parish Church, Perthshire on 27/4/1859.

She was the daughter of John McAra (b 2/9/1798, Monzie; d 23/3/1874, Crieff) and Margaret Cameron (b about 1800, Fowlis Wester, Perthshire; d 5/2/1891) who married in Crieff 11/12/1825

John was son of Finlay McAra (b 23/8/1769) and Christian McOmish (b 2/6/1775) who were married 29/8/1795

Monzie Parish Churchyard is quite literally FULL of McAra headstones which I have pix of if anyone interested

Neil and Matilda McAra are also relatives of mine.  Their youngest son James (born in 1850 is my great great Grandfather).

I know that he and his mother and twin sister (Catherine) cam to the Australian gold fields on a boat called the Hougomont in 1866.  But then moved to New Zealand to join the rush for gold at Gabriels Gully in Lawrence.  James married Janet McCorkindale (of Lawrence) and they had 10 children before she died at aged 42.  Catherine also married - Adam McCorkindale.

I do not know if any of the other siblings came to NZ with these three. Perhaps someone has some info they can add?

McAra still is not a common name here in NZ.

hope this helps fill in a few spots for someone.
Lisa
