John Brodie Reavil in the 1841/1851 Census for Woolwich
« on: Friday 07 January 05 08:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Could somebody lookup the name John Brodie Reavil in the 1841/1851 census for Woolwich.

John was born in Camberwell in 1834 and we have his parents listed as William and Margaret Reavil but cannot find out any further information about them.

Any information, particularly about where his family originated from, would be extremely usefull.

Many thanks in advance.....Andy

There is a partial match at ho107/ 1589 fol 417b , but he is aged only 10y.

There are also some Reavill at Ho107 1589/249a

(Both are Woolwich Pieces)

Hi Pauline,

Thanks for your research and it could possible be him in the 1841 Census even though we thought he would only be 8 Years old. Could you please give us what other information there was, i.e. Place of birth, Other people in the household, etc.

Look forwarde to your reply with interest.

Regards...ANDY

The details for the ref as listed below from the 1851 census:
Watermans Fields Woolwich:
John Reavil head mar age 47 chelsea pensioner born Norfolk
Mary do wife mar age 40 born Hants Portsmouth
James do son age 12 scholar born Bermuda West Indies
John  do son age 10 born do
Eliza do dau age 7 born Sussex Brighton

The other Reavill entry is for George and Hermione, with children Hermione, Mary and George.
Neither of these are very promising.

Thanks Carol for your reply. It is the best information received so far but John Brodie Reavils father and mother are quoted as William and Margaret. However the surname is very uncommon so I am sure there is a link. Thanks again.

This could be John in the 1851 census:
ref HO107 1590 folio 324: 22 Frederick Place, Plumstead
John B Revill lodger un age 16 apprentice Rl Arsenal born Surrey Camberwell
(lodging with Robert Ferguson and family, a blacksmith)

Well he's the right age, and place of birth matches, so it could be the right one !!

Hi Andy,
This is an entry from the 1841 census, which might be relevant, although the surname is unclear it starts with 'Re' and ends with 'l':
ref HO107 492-05 folio 18: Wellington Street, Woolwich
Margaret Re..l age 35 not born in county
Robert do age 11
John do age 7
Sarah do age 9
Mary do age 2
all the children were born in county

Later censuses may confirm whether this is the right family.

Hi Carol,

Sorry for the long delay in replying. 1851 seems spot on and the 1841 census looks possible although I have no details of brothers or sisters. Johns mother we think was Margaret Broadie (hence the Brodie middle name) and there was a recorded marriage between Margaret Broadie and William Reavil in Brixham Devon (IGI File).

Thank you for all your help.
