Same as you I'm not a full member of Ancestry; 'unpaid member' with a public tree, I do understand your frustration.  The issue with not being able to contact other owners of trees (having to wait and see if they contact you) is also very frustrating.  When people copy images from your ancestry tree it would be nice to be given the opportunity to network and collaborate together for the higher good! paid or unpaid! oh well, lets not forget that ancestry.com is a business that needs to make $s after all.  However unpaid members with public trees do provide a wealth of information for ancestry.com.  You can get my email address from fb or leave me a message and I will get back to you, Lyn Sullivan Byron Bay, not keen to post details here.

Bye for now

Hi Lynette

Thanks for the information, particularly the marriage detail for Joseph Hutton and Mary Ann Owens which is great to have, also the Owens births from Bathurst.  You have to wonder what brought them to the Walcha area.

I haven't delved into the Hutton tree for quite a while but my interest was raised a couple of weeks ago when I came across something on your line.  If I'm able to make contact with you direct I'm sure you would be interested.  If you have a tree on Ancestry and you can provide me the name of that tree, I'll have someone send you a message with my contact details.

I mentioned earlier that Annie's father Joseph Hutton was the son of Joseph Hutton (a convict from Exeter in Devon) and his wife Mary Whelan.  Their children were:

Elizabeth Hutton 1852 Warialda
Joseph Hutton 1853 Maitland (married Mary Ann Owens)
Cornelius Hutton 1855 Tamworth (my great-grandfather)
Henry Hutton 1857 Swamp Oak Creek near Limbri (Moonbi area)
George Hutton 1859 Mooonbi
Edward Hutton 1861 Swamp Oak Creek
Mary Ann Hutton 1864 Mihi Creek near Armidale
James Hutton 1865-1865 Saumarez Creek near Uralla

Mary Whelan died after the birth of James, in 1865.  Joseph (the convict) married for the second time in 1868, his wife was a widow named Ellen Campbell, and he died in 1877.

Your Annie (Rolfe) had a brother Cornelius, who was no doubt named after his Uncle Cornelius (my great-grandfather).

I wonder if you have researched Annie Rolfe's siblings at all and if you have done any research on the Huttons further back.

GlenRuth

Hello GlenRuth

As Annie Hutton is my great grandmother I have a lot of information about her children.  I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to talk with people who knew her immediate family.  I have not much at all on Mary Ann Owen's children and their ancestry.
Thanks for the info, I have now been able to fill in missing records re. the children of Mary Whelan & Joseph Hutton, much appreciated.

further to Joseph Hutton & Mary Ann Owens children:

* Annie b.1882-26 Apr 1955 m. 1902 Tingha, Joseph George Rolfe (yes he was known as George)
* Elizabeth Margaret Ellen b.1884 m. 1902 Inverell, KLEINHAUSS  ?
* Joseph b.1885 -1930 m. ,
* Mary A  b.1891 m. 1906, Tingha, Edward Bates ? (Mary would have been 15yrs old?) ?
NOTE; an Edward Bates died in 1910 GOULBURN, perhaps Mary Ann married again in 1912 Darelet Khan ?
* Edward  b.1892 -1939 m.
* Cornelius  b.1894-1936 m. Louisa Dezius b.1894 ? twin to Mabel ?
* Mabel Ethel Agnes  b.1894 .d 'unknown' twin to Cornelius? perhaps she died at birth?

the following for consideration ... hope you can follow my research, bit cryptic !

This is the only death record I have located for KLEINHAUSS in NSW BDM online index:
D. 8200/1958    KLEINHAUSS    MARGARET    47 YRS    MANLY SYDNEY
D. 8200/1958    KLEINHAUSS    MARGARET    47 YEARS    MANLY SYDNEY
Margaret KLEINHAUSS would have been born abt 1911, perhaps she is the daughter of Elizabeth M b.1884?

M. 2538/1906    BATES EDWARD,    HUTTON    MARY A, TINGHA
M.14923/1912    DARELET  KHAN,    HUTTON    MARY A, NARRABRI (Mary would have been 21yrs old?)

M. 14923/1912 KHAN DARELET,    HUTTON    MARY A, NARRABRI
M. 12570/1924 BROWN HERBERT,    HUTTON    MARY,  TINGHA

Edward & Mary Ann's children?
B. 18724/1906    BATES    NITA A E, f) EDWARD J m) MARY A,    TINGHA
B. 42380/1909    BATES    EDWARD T f) EDWARD m) MARY A    TINGHA

further food for thought ...

There is a ref to a Private J Hutton in the book 'World of it's Own, Inverells's Early Years 1827-1920', Elizabeth Wiedemann p225_a letter from Private J Hutton to his father, from 'somewhere in France'.
Have you seen this letter?

It appears that Mary Whelan, her baby son James and baby daughter Mary A all died in 1865_do you know why?

Mary WHELAN an Irish orphan?
Joseph HUTTON became a policeman at Warialda in 1852?
source; RootChat ...Sally Northey
'My husbands' Joseph HUTTON arrived as a convict on 'Hercules' in 1832.
Joseph HUTTON was charged for breaking and entering the dwelling of
Elizabeth Littlejohn in the Parish of St. Davids, County Devon, England on
31 December 1830 and stealing a crown, a half crown, two shillings and a
sixpence. This Elizabeth Littlejohn could have been a relative of Joseph's
as his mother was Frances LITTLEJOHN.  Joseph was transported to the Colonies for a term of 14 years. He worked arount Maitland. On the 21st April, 1851 he married Mary WHELAN an Irish orphan.  Joseph HUTTON became a policeman at Warialda in 1852 and while there a son Cornelius HUTTON was born in 1855. Cornelius married Louisa DEZIUS in 1884 at Bundarra and my husband is descended from this line.  Is there any HUTTON researchers out there.
note; I have not yet contacted Sally.

more for you  ...
source; RootsWebAUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS-L Archives
From: *
I have found a reference to my Joseph Hutton, per Hercules, 1832,
working as a shepherd on a property near Moonbi ( Tamworth area) after he
received his C of F.  It has been suggested that the property, known as Swamp Oak Creek, was owned by Philip Gidley King, but the source of this information was not recorded.

Wow Lyn, that's a whole lot of information - thank you!

I have discovered that contributors to RootsChat can send Personal Messages to one another once they have posted three messages - I sent you a PM yesterday, hopefully you will be able to pick that up somehow and can make contact with me direct (I'm new to this list so don't quite know how it all works).

You have been able to pick up quite a bit about the convict Joseph Hutton from various sources, and I'm sure that will help you link him to your own family (his son Joseph who married Mary Ann Owens).  I will explain my links to the two contributors you mention when we are able to touch base.

Because the same names are used down the generations it gets confusing, but the Cornelius Hutton who married Louisa Dezius is my Cornelius born 1855 (i.e. son of the convict Joseph) rather than Cornelius born 1894, brother of your Annie.

I've researched your Cornelius - he married in Queensland and died there:

CORNELIUS HUTTON
Birth:  16948/1894   HUTTON   CORNELIUS  JOSEPH  MARY A   INVERELL
Qld Marriage:  1913/C4087   Kuhn   Evie Rebecca   Hutton   Cornelius
Qld Death:  1960/C800   Cornelius   Hutton   Joseph   Mary Ann Owens

Cornelius' WWII service record is available on the National Library website.

Below is a summary of what I've found on Annie's other siblings:

ELIZABETH MARGARET ELLEN HUTTON
Elizabeth did marry George Klenhauss or Kleinhanss:

9330/1902   KLEINHAUSS  GEORGE M   HUTTON   ELIZABETH M E   INVERELL

JOSEPH HUTTON
Birth:  19841/1885  HUTTON  JOSEPH  JOSEPH  MARY A  GLEN INNES
Marriage:   8031/1908   HUTTON   JOSEPH   MILLER  AGNES C   INVERELL

Death:    5211/1928   HUTTON   JOSEPH   JOSEPH   MARY A  CESSNOCK
Death:   47180/1973   HUTTON   AGNES CONSTANCE   JOHN   MARY   CESSNOCK

Newcastle Crematorium:
HUTTON Agnes Constance 16/03/1973 1 Bent St Cessnock 87 SCATTERED 47151

MARY A HUTTON
Mary is a bit of a mystery - as you have found.  Further work required.

EDWARD HUTTON
Birth:  36763/1892   HUTTON   EDWARD  JOSEPH  MARY A  WARIALDA
Qld Marriage:  1920/C2912   Pfingst   Annie Catherine Elizabeth   Hutton   Edward
Qld Death:  1963/B61526   Edward   Hutton   Joseph   Mary Ann Owens

Qld Births for Annie Catherine Pfingst (most likely 1898??)
1898/C3179   Annie Katherine Elizabeth   Pfingst   Charles   Annie Heironymus
1900/C3257   Annie Kathleen Elizabeth   Pfingst   Albert   Amy Tyrrell

BDM records for Queensland don't cover the same years as NSW unfortunately but they are brilliant because they provide the mother's maiden name which is just so helpful.

Edward Hutton served in WWI - his service record is available on the National Library website.  The index shows he was from Grafton which is confusing, on the first page of the records it shows that this Grafton is/was near Inverell.

MABEL ETHEL AGNES HUTTON
Birth:  16947/1894   HUTTON   MABEL E A  JOSEPH  MARY A   INVERELL
Marriage:   9431/1921  O'TOOLE   TERENCE   HUTTON   MABEL E A  KURRI KURRI
Death:   2491/1931   O'TOOLE   MABEL A   JOSEPH   MARY A      CESSNOCK

Cessnock Cemetery
O'TOOLE Mabel 20-Mar-31  Nulkaba Cemetery

Ancestry - Electoral Roll
Name:    Mabel Ethel Agnes O'Toole
Residence:    1930 - city, Hunter, New South Wales

As you can see, some of the family gravitated to Queensland and some to the Hunter Valley area - presumably for work (it would have been easy for them to go from the New England to the Newcastle area by train).  A check of the Electoral Rolls will show what they all did for a living.

Hopefully there is something new for you in what I've found about your line.

I haven't seen the reference to a letter from Private J Hutton - there are other Huttons in the New England area so he may be from those families.

As for Mary Whelan's death - their little daughter Mary died earlier the same year (1865), baby James died 2nd October and poor Mary died 4th October (premature delivery).

Hi all,  I haven't looked at rootschat for a long time but there are so many Goodfellow descendants who have used this site and I'm hoping you might get a link to look at some photos I have taken when I was in Wiltshire in 2019 (thankfully decided to do that trip then and didn't plan on doing in in 2020).

I was absolutley amazed on arrival in Wilton to find the village square situated beside the carpet factory.  Yes the carpet factory where John Smith weaver would have worked.  Hopefully you have all worked out by now that the immigration record should have said Jane's parents were "John Smith and Martha nee Clarke" instead of "John and Martha Clarke".  That error had me on the wrong search for about 10 years.  While looking around the area of the village square in Wilton, I needed to find the toilets and thankfully I did that as there is a little museum in glass cases on the wall of the passageway through to the toilets.  I didn't find any mention of that in any of the brochures.  The site doesn't seem to want to let me add photos in multiples so I'll try with one and add some more later at a more respectable hour.
