Help in sorting out which Mary is mine CREED, Woolwich/Greenwich area
« on: Monday 28 January 08 02:32 GMT (UK) »
My ancestors are:

Henry Terry born abt 1842 in Leeds who married Mary Creed born abt 1839.  They were married 21 Mar 1861 in Woolwich Parish Church, Greenwich, with Mary's father shown as William Creed.

I have not been able to identify Mary, her father or the family CREED in any earlier census returns either 1841 or 1851 as I can't find a family that seems to fit.  She is shown in later returns as having been born in London, Middx, and died in Leeds age 33 of convulsions.

I have Henry Terry on the 1841 and 1851 census, but can't find them both on the 1861 census anywhere at all, nor pick out Mary Creed and her family in 1841 or 1851.

Can anyone help - I know a fresh pair of eyes sometimes can sortt much easier than me continually looking at the same info and making no sense of it.

1871 England Census
Alfred Terry 4  Leeds, Yorkshire, England Son  Leeds  Yorkshire
Benjamin Terry 6  Leeds, Yorkshire, England Son  Leeds  Yorkshire
Henry Terry 30  Leeds, Yorkshire, England Head  Leeds  Yorkshire
Joshua Terry 1  Leeds, Yorkshire, England Son  Leeds  Yorkshire
Mary Terry 32  London, Middlesex, England Wife  Leeds  Yorkshire
William Terry 8  Leeds, Yorkshire, England Son  Leeds  Yorkshire

Thanks in advance for any help sorting out Mary and her family.....

Hi Deby

Unfortunately, there is quite a chunk of Woolwich (the arsenal area) missing from the 1861 census so this could account for you not being able to find them in 1861 :-\

Regarding the 1861 marriage certificate, is there any address for Mary, any occupation for her father and who were the witnesses?

Both have Address of 85 High Street (pretty sure that's missing)

groom is a shoe maker
her father is a "servant"
witness Wm Hannan? and Mary Ann Paynter (her mark)

The BMD shows a William Creed marriage registration 1st Q 1840, District of Newington vol-4 pg -261. Possibly the father of Mary Ann or Ann.  Her eldest son was most likely named after her father and the 2nd eldest,Benjamin possibly names after Henry's father.
The 1861 Census was on 7th April-They could possibly be still away after the marriage in March.Being married at that time, Greenwich is in the Registration District of the county of Kent. There is a Joseph Terry marriage 1stQ 1839 in Greenwich Vol 5  Pg 241-Father,or Uncle or relative? The is a marriage of Henry thomas Terry in Lewisham(Kent county)1st Q 1838 Vol 5 pg 259-Poss father? Try Surrey & Kent areas for family.
My Grt Grandma was Anne Creed  from Berkshire County &her mom Anne &  father John from Oxfordshire,  Anne(dhtr)  married in St Lukes Chelsea, London She had a Brother William born 1829 in Tilehurst Berkshire& a brother John Born 1832. & 4 other sisters. Most likely not related but my Anne lived in London most of her life.Died Hornsey Edmonton Midd. Its a long search for these relatives. Terry must have been born 1840/41 as 1871 census 2 April & age was at last birthday. Hope some of this helps=Janet
