St Pancras 1825 Marriage - Details ??
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 14:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello and g'day from OZ,
I'm just wanting to find out what details there might be if I got a copy of the marriage register transcription for St Pancras 1825.

Does anyone know what it might have as info on it - will it state the ages of the bride and groom, and possibly where they were born or living at the time of marriage?   ??? ???

I've looked up the IGI and have recorded all relevant batch nos etc.  I have never got anything this early before (only  done 1837 onwards up to this point)....

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks nita

Hi nita,

Going by my experience with parish registers in Dorset you will find their condition (spinster etc), the parish they were living in, witnesses and if the marriage was by Banns or Licence.  Sometimes "with parents consent" if not of full age.

I've not seen any London ones but I guess it would be the same, hope that helps.

Nita

They would be pretty much as Nanny Jan describes, the format for marriage registers was laid down by Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753, and the printed forms that most parishes used from that date did not allow space for extra detail, though once in a while you might find an extra note squeezed in. Your best hope of extra infromation would be if the marriage was by licence (most were after banns), in which case you might find some extra details on the allegation for the licence itself. (The licence was the paper given to the bride or groom, the allegation was the part that was kept by the issuing authority).

marriage lic.details sometimes show "age about" or "widow of John Smith".
Who are you looking for?

Hi nahbois,
I'm looking for Joseph Frith (think it was spelt Freeth) and Ann Overy.    I'm more interested in Frith, as I have no details, and it might help if I knew his age or where he was born, as there were so many in England around the turn of the century.  I think I found Ann's birth/christening on the IGI.
Your help is much appreciated.
Anita

Many thanks to Nanny Jan and Mean_genie, that helps explain a few things.   I do hope that it was by licence.
Nanny Jan, do you have a copy of one of those Dorset ones, as I'd love to have a look at an image if you can attach?
Thanks
Anita

Sorry Anita but I don't have any images; my information came from hunting for people on the www.dorset-opc.com website.  :(

Hi Anita.
I will get onto it now.  You would never imagine this but someone helped me on this site today to find a distant grandfather and he was married in London and his first wife was Elizabeth Overee.  I do not doubt there would be many ways of spelling that!   She died prior to having any children.   Small world huh?
