Hannah Craven-Tarporley 1820.
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 20:37 GMT (UK) »
I am currently researching a Hannah Craven Baptised in Tarporley Cheshire in 1820.In 1836 she is married to a Thomas Price at Ellesmere Shropshire, and in the 1851 Census her Birthplace is given as Chester Cheshire, but in all the other Census years through to 1901,she gives her Birthplace as Wrexham. Why would someone born in Tarporley, her Parents are given in the Tarporley Parish Registers,as living in Willington at the time of her Baptism, give her Birthplace as Wrexham?

William, there could be a very simple reason e.g. she was born in Wrexham, but her parents moved to Willlington and she was therefore baptised at Tarporley. Sometimes the mother went home to her mother to have her baby.  Does her grandmother originate from Wrexham?  The other possibility is that the Wrexham Registration district is not actually that far from Tarporley (as the crow flies) this might offer a clue.

Thanks Kath, and its an interesting theory.Hannah's Parents are given in the Tarporley Parish Registers as Joseph and Elizabeth Craven. With the Baptisms of other children born to the couple,I found them in the 1851 Census living at Utkinton Cheshire-HO107/2170/68/14 ,Joseph given as born in Utkinton in c 1800,and Elizabeth given as born in Oscroft Cheshire, again in c 1800.There is a possible Marriage in March 1820 of a Joseph Craven and an Elizabeth Johnson at Chester St Oswald's.

William, this is interesting, (if I have the correct Church), why would someone who was born in Oscroft walk or ride through Chester (and the many churches in the city) to St.Oswalds at Mollington to be married?  It could be one of the many family history mysteries.
I am sure that I have read somewhere that Cheshire and Flintshire (part of) were once one registration district.  If this is the case I wonder is this why she seemed to think she was born in Wrexham?  I am sure one of the more experienced Rootschatters can answer this query on the registration district, a post would probably give the correct answer.

Thanks Kath, and I have to say that I have checked the Baptism for Hannah and other siblings,at the Chester Record Office last Thursday. One thing is for sure there are no earlier Baptisms for any children of the couple,Hannah being Baptised on the 6th of August 1820,and given the ages of Joseph and Elizabeth in the 1851 Census, this would more likely to be the case.
As far as the Marriage is concerned,I am being perhaps entirely speculative, for the Marriage in March 1820 at St Oswald's is taken from a submitted entry on the IGI.Whilst there are two possible Baptisms for an Elizabeth Johnson in the Tarvin Parish around 1800,it does seem a mystery as to why she would marry at St Oswald's which is about seven miles away.

Hello William
Would it be any help knowing that on Bertram Merril marriage index, the Joseph Craven m to Elizabeth Johnson 20/3/1820 St. Oswald, was a mason?
