Colson family, Leckhampstead, Bucks
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 17:09 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information about George Colson, b 1811 in Bucks.

On 1841 census he listed as living with a farmer, Obediah Bowden and his wife in Soulsbury Bucks

His name is given as the father of her expected baby by my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother, Mary James, when she enters the Union Workhouse in Bicester, Oxon in 1842.  When the baby is born she is registered as Mary Ann, with no father's name recorded on the birth certificate.

I can find no further record in census material for George.

I have found a number of deaths recorded in the name of George Colson between 1842 and 1851, but none of them are in Bucks.

I have found a Richard Colson living in Leckhampstead, Bucks whose given birthdate could make him a sibling of George.

If anyone could look in the Leckhampstead parish records to se if there is any information about Colsons, I would be most grateful.

Many thanks
Masha :)

Hi

I notice Mary James was also working for Obadiah in 1841

Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years on the 1841 census so George could have been between 30-34 so his birthyear could be between 1807-1811

The 1851 has a John b 1827 Leckhamstead  & Eliza Colson with a 3 month old son George Downing Colson - Downing was Eliza's maiden name per freebmd

They are living next door to the Richard Colson you mention.

John is the son of Richard & Mary Colson per IGI entry.  Richard could be the son of Robert - again per IGI

However - there is no George Colson with a father Robert on the IGI or BVRI so I can't prove any link

The 1851 has a George Coulston aged 44 b Denham Bucks - transcribed as Conlston.  He is single and shown as a dealer but I doubt he is the right one

In 1861 he is George Colston aged 55 b Denham still single and in lodgings

Thanks for reminding me about the rounding up and down of ages, I'd forgotten about this practice.  Yes,  Mary James was also in the household.  Her family lived in a village some 6/8 miles from Bicester, which is why she ended up in the Workhouse there.  She went on to marry a widower with two daughters and they had four more children together.  Three of these children died as children/teenagers and Mary herself died at the age of 38.  Quite a sad life.  Her husband married for a third time, but had no more children.  I don't know what happened to my Gt Gt Grandmother until she married a James Washbrook at Kidlington parish church.

Many thanks Carol for taking the time to find this info.  This will set me off in yet another direction.  I am very new to Roots, but already the 'community' has made me feel welcome.

Regards
Masha ;D

There's an IGI entry for the birth/baptism of a George Coulson in Bedford at about the right time - Bedford's not that far from Leckhampstead:

born 5.2.1811, baptised 28.4.1811 son of John & Elizabeth.  :-\

Jill

HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Many thanks for your help Jill.  I have never had any luck with IGI, I'm obviously doing something wrong!
