Thackland Farm
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 16:21 GMT (UK) »
In 1851 Charles Rich owned Thackland Farm, Rainham, Kent.  Unable to find any records other than census return.  Any ideas where I should look?  Doesn't appear to be around now!

Mac, are you sure it's Thackland and not Mackland?

Hi there - do you know I think you're right!  I have just revisited the census return and it could quite well be Mackland Farm House.  If it is, do you have any info on it? Many thanks Little Mac

I'm sorry but I don't know anything about it - I'm not that familiar with the area - just looked up place names in Rainham early 1900s here:

http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/KPN/A/01/01.htm

Have you tried http://www.historicaldirectories.org ?

There is a Macklands on the Images of England site but I'm not sure that it would have been Macklands Farm http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/ - you will need to register to view the picture.

I have noticed a property for sale, Macklands Cottages, which I presume would be in the vicinity http://www.propertyforkent.co.uk/localprices.aspx?val=ME9%207UT with a link to a current day map of the area.

It would appear there are some documents at the Centre for Kentish Studies, Maidstone http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp

You should be able to find it on an old map (c1870s?) but it takes a while to move around and zoom in on Rainham http://www.old-maps.co.uk/indexmappage2.aspx

Hello Little Mac

I have been looking out of a kitchen window at Mackland's House all morning!

If you would like any photos or any info that I can give you on the area please just ask?

Macklands was an area in Rainham in what is now called Station Road but was originally White Horse Lane.  There is a pub, of which I used to be a regular, called The Mackland Arms.  Mackland's House used to be privately owned but is now a residential home for the elderly.  Bungalows have been built in the grounds and the rest of the orchards etc that surrounded it were sold off in the 1970's for a housing estate.  From what I can remember they were orchards of pear trees.

Hope this is of some help

Hi Tina

Wow thanks for that - it still exists then?  On the census it is Macklands Farm House - it is the same place is it?  This is so exciting!

I'd love any info you could send me, thank you so much.

Hello Wendy

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you, the Grandchildren descended on us over the weekend and the books that I needed to look in were in the loft of all places.

I will PM you for your email address as I am not sure it I can add a PDF on here or even if I would be breaking the copyright laws if I did as it is scanned pages from a book.

Regards
Tina
