Emily Darling Scarborough

I'm coming back to something that's puzzled me for some time.

I have a birth certificate for Emily Darling, born in Scarborough December 1838. Her mother is Jane Darling from Scarborough. there is no father mentioned.

This may well be part of my family, but I would like to find Jane and/or Emily after 1838. I can't find them together in 1841 or later, nor can I find a Scarborough death for Emily.

I'd be grateful for another pair of eyes - Emily can't have vanished into thin air. Maybe I'm missing an obscure mistranscription, so any suggestions will be welcome.

This is actually my puzzle. Tom and Fanny Darling are my 4x-great-grandparents. I had seen this birth of a Jane, but cannot find anything about her apart from this. I suspect that Emily is her daughter - but would like to find something to validate this.

Tom & Fanny also had a son Thomas, born c1817 (my 3xg-grandfather) who married a Jane Smith - so she is also a Jane Darling (born about 1817). It is unlikely that Emily was her daughter, as this Jane's other children all mention the father, Thomas.

Jane and Emily can't have vanished into thin air - at the very least there should be a death certificate. Better still would be a marriage certificate or a census return showing the couple.

I come back to this puzzle every year, hoping a fresh look will reveal something new, but I'm beginning to think this is an indestructible brick wall.

Was Emily's baptism at St Mary's scarborough? If so I can have a look at the transcripts in Scarborough Library sometime this week for you and see if there are any clues as to where she went!

That's very kind of you, Emma. If she is part of my Darlings, I expect she would have been baptised in Scarborough. I have her birth certificate, that just has Scarborough on (no address - probably because it was 1839). My branch of the family did emigrate to Hull, but most stayed in Scarborough.

An obvious answer would be that between Emily's birth in 1839 and the census in 1841, Jane could have married - but I've been through the indexes and can't find a marriage. If either Jane or Emily had died, you would expect to find a death certificate, but again I can't. I've looked on ancestry and findmypast (in case it was a mistranscription) but there's nothing.

I'll be very grateful indeed if you can find anything at all - and thank you again for your generous offer.

Well, a death cert arrived this morning - solving one mystery, but creating another.

Little Emily Darling died in April 1841 (therefore, before the 1841 census) aged 2, of scarlet fever. Jane Darling, her mother, a spinster, was the informant.

Therefore Jane SHOULD be on the 1841 census - so where is she? The address given on Emily's death certificate is Green Man (??) Yard, Market Place, New Malton. The registration district on the cert is Malton. Emily died in the parish of St Michael New Malton.

I imagine the reason I can't find Jane is due to a mistranscription, but even taking off the 'exact spelling' button I haven't been able to find Jane in 1841. Although there are a number of deaths for Jane Darlings in 1841, none is in the right area.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Lesley,
When searching for Jane darling , try changing the first letter of her surname eg Carling or Parling.
This worked for me after searching for a Peel he was mistranscribed as Neel.
