The couple in the 1855 marriage appear too old to be Maggie's parents.

I cannot see any reference to Catherine McLean being deceased on Maggie's marriage entry. (attatched)

The 1911 Census gives Margaret Mclean's birthplace as Portree and her birth year as circa 1865. I am probably going to pay a researcher again but if anyone has any info or tips they will be gratefully recieved.

(The researcher was unable to find her birth)

Hi,

We should talk, my great-great grandmother was Agnes Gilligan, ms McDonald.  She married my great-great grandfather Michael in 1872 and lived on Queens Street in Govan at the time.  She had been married previously to a man named McCallium (?) and had a daughter named Annie.  In 1881 Cenus she lived with Michael, Annie, Edward, John and her mother Catherine.  Agnes' mother was Catherine and her father was Finlay McDonald.  According to her marriage license her mother's maiden name was also McDonald but that her mother Catherine was deceased in 1872 when she married my gggrandfather.  That can't be possilbe if Catherine was living with them in 1881.  Really not sure what to make of it but she also had 2 daughters with Michael named Mary and Kate (Catherine?).

Anyway, let me know what other information you have and I'll forward anything that I have to you or if you need anything like address' from my information just let me know.  By the way, Michael also died at Govan Poorhouse Merryflats in 1897 which appears to be the same place that Catherine died.

We could have found family if in deed Maggie and Agnes were sisters.

Interesting puzzle here  :)

MW, have you managed to find Annie's birth entry? Not sure if you are aware but Ann/Agnes are interchangeable in Scotland.

I think this is Annie's birth entry:

AGNES MCCALLUM Birth: 17 AUG 1865 Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Parents:COLIN MCCALLUM and AGNES MCDONALD

And marriage:

AGNES MCDONALD and COLIN MCCALLUM
Marriage: 14 APR 1865 in Govan, Lanark

I am a bit confused regarding the ages of Catherine McDonald and her overall age to possibly be the mother of Maggie Mclean.

Sancti's find of the death cert from 1884 shows Catherine McDonald/McLean as aged 64 at death. However, in that 1881 census entry with a Catherine mother living with Agnes Gilligan, Catherine shows as 80 - was this an error on the transcript for the census?

Monica,

Thank you so much for the information about Ann/Agnes.  That is the birth certificate of our Ann and the marriage license of our Agnes McDonald.  She remarried my gg grandfather in 1872.  The age of Catherine seems to be a bit confusing.  Catherine's death certificate states she was 64 when she died and the census shows that she was 80 in 1881 but on ScotlandsPeople when you first search and the page comes up, her age shows at 70 but I am wondering if her age was actually 60 at the time of the census which would actually put that about the right age.  My Catherine in the 1881 census puts her birth place of Isle of Skye which is originally what made me look this up.

So according to that time schedule Catherine would have been born in 1820 which would have made her 25 when she had Agnes (my gggran) and 45 when she had Maggie.  But if this Maggie is the daughter of my ggggran Catherine, she would have already been deceased when Maggie got married in 1887 and the marriage certificate does not state that she was deceased.

I would love to find out if Agnes and Maggie are sisters.  It would be amazing to put this together.

This mystery deepens....I guess its what makes genealogy so interesting. I will try to sit down this weekend with all my papers and see if I can tie anything in.
