Birth -Mclean - Inverness 1860's
« on: Thursday 24 January 08 19:56 GMT (UK) »
I have a particularly elusive ancestor who ,despite me paying researchers, refuses to be found. Has anyone got any suggestions or are any of you researching the same lines ?

The ancestor is Maggie Mclean ... she was born in the 1860's but her marriage entry & subsequent census entries do not tally with a specific date. (two census entries give her birthplace as "Scotland" and one as "Invernshire" {sic} ).
Her parents were John Mclean (carrier of goods) and the mother Catherine Mclean m/s McDonald.
These are the marriage entry details -
29th November 1887
127 Plantation Street , Govan
William Murray (Police Constable-bachelor) and Maggie Mclean (Domestic Servant - Spinster)
Minister William Fraser of Argyll Free Church.  Marriage took place at the brides address. Also Maggie "made her mark" rather than sign her name.
Richter - Brandenburg, Germany
Bateman - Cumberland,Liverpool,Canada
Woods - Liverpool
Anderson- Ireland
Murray - Aberdeenshire
McLean - Scotland (pos Inverness)

Hello,

Lets try to get some more interest in this one :O)  If you say born in the '60's lets go back at least 10 years - so possibly 50's.  What census records do you have?  the 1891 and 1901?  What family is she with on the dates you have?  Do you have her death entry - where did she die?

Have you tried the IGI - www.familysearch.org

1855 to 1875 brings up the following names to a couple with your name - no Maggie though.  A mixture of submitted and extracted entries.  (possible the Donald is an error on a submitters part).  Regards,   Steve

Hi ! I found her in the 1891 & 1901 Census in England. She married in 1887 and moved to England then (her husband, although a Scot, was a Policeman in Liverpool).
There are a couple of possibilities in the 1881 Census (Scotland) but none that leap out at me.

Just had a report back from a researcher in Scotland. She has been through all the birth records for the 1860's in Scotland and found nothing. It looks like this is another brick wall.

I do not know anything about her family at all. She was working as a domestic servant in Govan when she married William - he was orginally from Aberdeenshire but had moved to Liverpool as a Police Constable. Nobody in the family knows anything about her....someone thought she was "a farmer's daughter from the Isle of Skye" but that does not tie in with the marriage entry.
Her and William named their children - William(after father ?) , Annie (paternal Grandmother) , Alexander (paternal grandfather), Catherine (maternal grandmother) and Margaret (mother)
I will see if I can get some more info on the marriage you mentioned above - thank you.
