Seeking my grandma
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 16:42 GMT (UK) »
Her name was Sarah Ellen born around 1880 give or take a year or two.

Her married name was Laverack and I know plenty about that side of the family but would like to know more about her parents if possible.

I believe her mother was called Harriet Burgan/Burgen or could have been Young.  There has been a lot of silence about her past so I suspect she may have been born out of wedlock.

Sarah was born in Bradford West Yorkshire.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks
Robinson, Mitchell, Bellerby, Laverack, Turner

It looks like she married in the name of Burgon.

From FreeBMD

Sarah Ellen Burgon and Frank Laverack on same page.  June Q 1904 at Bradford.  Vol 9b Page 158.

Hope this helps.

There is also this 1891 census entry which seems to meet your criteria.

Diamond Court, Bradford

William Burgon 42, Labourer, b Bradford
Harriet 42, Washerwoman, b Bilton Staffs
Sarah E 12, b Bradford

Hi DS

I was just about to post that in 1891 Harriet is enumerated as born Bilton, Scotland but it looks like Stafford to me on the manuscript and in 1901 as you say she is born Bilton, Yorkshire.  ???

Do you think this may be where the Burgan/Young confusion comes in?

Hi Sandie

Well done 8)

I think that you might have found the Marriage there, but just in case anyone else has difficulty finding the entry on FreeBMD his name is spelled as Birgan on the Index.

Possible Birth Registration

1848 Tadcaster JAS quarter 23 658

Harriett Young

This is the only Harriett Young registered in Tadcaster between 1845 and 1855, so there is a good chance that it is the right one to match with the census entry.
