This is a subscription site, BUT new resources are usually free for about a week as they are added to the total database.

Currently Qld public service records 1864-1948 (with gaps) is free for the next 5 days. I've found a few who were recorded on electoral rolls as public servants, but now I know what they actually did e.g. surveyer, clerk and slaughterhouse inspector.
