James Stenhouse of Edinburgh

Hi,

I am trying to research one particular branch of my tree relating to James Stenhouse.

James according to IGI was born James Ogilvie Stenhouse on 19 Dec 1817 to John Stenhouse and Christina McBain.  Looking just at James, I can find him on the 1841 census living a 8 Cowgate Head, St john's Edinburgh.

In 1851 he is still at Cowgate Head

Presumably, Jean the daughter had died between the censuses.  However, this is the last I can find on the family.

Can anyone help me find out what happened to them all?

Also, can anyone help me find a marriage record of James Stenhouse and Christina Simpson?  If the youngest child is 3, we're looking at about 1838?

Any help really appreciated.

there is a marriage on the IGI for james stenhouse and janet or
jess chambers 25th may 1836 north leith midlothian
perhaps the mother had re-married or was using her maiden name
there is a public tree on ancestry with james stenhouse and jessie
chalmers and most of the the children that are on the 1841 & 1851
census
they don't have the marriage but do have death dates for james(1884)
and jessie(1879)
if they have applied for the death certificates then they have parents
for james - john stenhouse & elizabeth cairns
i'm not saying what they have is correct but it might be worth keeping
it in mind

Yeah,  I just found that death record for a James Stenhouse which puts his parents as John Stenhouse and Elizabeth Cairns.  I though this was my James but am now not so sure.

I am like a Christmas onion - in a bit of a pickle!

that tree also has parents of jessie chalmers as robert chalmers and
jane simpson - it seems to be quite well researched
what info. do you have on james that you are sure about ?

IGI says he was born on 19 Dec 1817.  That's all really! Everything else I have now researched is largely up in the air!

James & Jessie must still be in the area. In 1871 they are in St. Johns, Edinburgh at 24 Cowgate

i can see his mother christian stenhouse on the 1841 census along
with brothers alexander and ebenezer(both brass founders)
and then not a lot else

Tell me about it! This is driving me crazy!

I can't even find deaths for them in case they were wiped out by something.  There's no history of migration so don't really think that is an option.

If I don't figure this out soon, I may well have to admit myself to the local asylum!
