Agnus Darling and Alexander Forsyth
« on: Saturday 19 January 08 18:12 GMT (UK) »
I have just discovered that my gggg Grandfather Alexander Forsyth (1801 Durham- possibly Chester le Street but not entirely sure) probably married Agnus Darling (1803 Lumsdon Berwickshire). They were married some time before 1832 (the first child I know is theirs).
Does anyone have any information on marriages to double check this? Or on Alexander's birth? (his mother is Mary)
Thanks
Claire

Somewhat confused here since you state Alexander Forsyth in the Subject and then in the text refer to Robert Forsyth.

Found a family in Chester le Street on 1841 Census with Head as Alexander Forsyth so assuming this is them.   You state he was born 1801 Durham - possibly Chester le Street - mother Mary (who is with family on the Census) but according to the census both Alexander and his mother Mary were NOT born in Durham and thought I ought to point this out.

Sorry Annette - had changed the Title but not the name....
Thanks for pointing that out about the birth place- I have just looked back through my census information and his birth place is not given in 1861, obviously I misread the 1841 census.
I do not have the census for 1851 either I have realised, so will look for it now, but if anyone fancies looking too then that would be great.
Census ref for 1861 is RG9/3763
I also don't have Alexander's death, but it looks like he died between 1861 and 1871 as Agnus lives with daughter Agnus in 1871 and is widowed.

Thanks - sorry for being so confusing! :-[

Hi

I am new to this site and I sent a post yesterday with regard to the Darling and Forsyth connection.  After I did this I realised that I should have replied to your post instead of doing a new one (at least I hope this is what I should do because it was a long time ago when you made this enquiry).  :-[

My ggg grandfather was Henry Forsyth b: 1831/33 Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland.  His parents were Alexander Forsyth b: 1801 Norham, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland and he married Agnes.

My family have always said that we were related to Grace Horsley Darling of the Forfarshire Steamer rescue and that Agnes was her sister.  Grace Darling doesn't have a sister called Agnes, but I wondered if she was indeed the Darling connection.

Seeing your post has given me new hope.  How sure are you that she was Agnes Darling?

Yours hopefully

Welcome to Rootschat Mofamily :)

I cant find them in 1851 either.
The easiest way to prove this is to purchase the Birth Cert of Alexander born c 1840.
Alexander FORSYTH, Sept 1839, Chester le Street, 24 25
It will provide his Mothers Maiden Name.

Trish :)

It  is very difficult as Agnes keeps changing her POB;
1871 Census, Alnwick, Northumberland RG10/4994/7/8
Poor Daughter Agnes is listed as an Idiot :(
If this is her in 1881 another place;
1881 Scotland, RG11/4979/126/28

Death Reg;
Agnes FORSYTH, March 1886, Chester le Street, 10a 289, Age 84

Thanks Trish

I know;  I wasn't sure if it was the same Agnes Forsyth, but as they both had a daughter called Agnes born in 1844 I suppose it must be her.  Poor Agnes jnr, fancy being called an idiot  :( .

Obtaining the birth certificate was my next step, but just wanted to see what littleclaire had to say since she seemed sure Agnes was a Darling as she is related to her too.

Here's hoping I hear from her as well.

Hi Mofamily

Welcome to roots......

My GGG Grandfather was Robert Forsyth b 1842 Lumley who married Elizabeth Beaney (your Henry's brother). I have his marriage cert which confirms his father as Alexander. The next cert I was going to order as I plough through my tree verifying the info is his birth, which should verify Agnus' surname.

I got the Darling name from a contact on Genes Reunited I think. She was totally convinced this was right but couldn't tell me why, I think it was a family story too, although it was a long time ago when I was in contact.

I have info on Robert's descendants and I have your Henry married to an Eleanor. Is that right?

How did you get Alexander's birthplace as Norham? I haven't been able to find his birth place on any census records. Perhaps we might be able to help each other try and make sense of the info? I seem to remember when I was looking at this info the first time Alexander and Agnus drove me slightly mad. Have you managed to find them on the 1851? I looked everywhere........

thanks

Claire :-)
