Hi Debbie,

Thank you for your assistance.  It all appears to fit in well. However I have one question (sorry if I am being a little thick) but from previous info gathered regarding Sarah and Ellen's marraiges (in 1891 and 1894 respectively) it states that their father Philip was a bricklayer but having receieved your info it appears that he died in 1888.  Surely on the marriage certificate it would state 'deceased' or would they put in his occupation when he was alive???  Any more info you are able to give on any of the viners would be much appreciated..

Thanks again

Gill   ;D ;D

Hi Gill

wether they wrote the occupation or deceased on the marriage,  when the father was already dead seems to have been pretty random and up to the person officiating at the marriage,  there are many cases in the Abingdon records and others where the occupation is put in just as if the father was still alive.

I think this would be Martha with her family in 1841 in Wootton in Oxfordshire - I wondered which Wootton it was cos there's one in Berkshire as well that is closer to Abingdon - but it appears its the Oxfordshire one which ties in with Woodstock for the registration district on the marriage

from 1841 census - Wootton Oxfordshire

John Benbow 35
Hannah Benbow 35
William Benbow 12
Sarah Benbow 10
Mary Benbow 8
Jane Benbow 6
Eliza Benbow 4
Martha Benbow 1

At the moment I can't find the family in 1851 or 61 - but John and Hannah were still alive cos I've found them in 1871 still in Wootton - though all the children have left home

Hannah Benbow 69
John Benbow 67
