That's excellent news!  I really hope they do publish it publicly, seems a waste otherwise, and hopefully it might lead to more conservation measures.  I tried to see if they have a website but I couldn't find anything.  Out of interest who's the project leader?  I did 2 years of Archaeology, wonder if I might know them.

Like others on this fascinating thread, I have relatives buried in Cathcart Old Parish churchyard. According to an illustration in a book published in 1880, they had a fine monument, like a huge open book, lying flat on the ground, with railings around it. Their surnames were Lee, Smith and Cooper.

Wonder if you've ever seen anything like that during your explorations?

Thanks Rita.  You give me too much credit.  There are others do a lot more trudging than me.

Sharon, I've had a look through the names I noted down after my last visit and don't see Lee or Cooper.  There are a couple of Smith stones but not in groups.
I can't think of a stone such as you describe but will have a look.  Any chance you could post a scan of the illustration? - it might ring a bell with me.

The Churchyard is not as accessible as it was, the gates always being locked and the wall I normally clamber over has been repaired - I might try climbing the gates but with the recent vandalism in Cardonald* I might get a few odd looks!

Many thanks. Here's a scan of the illustration. It seems to have been drawn in 1874 and then - as I said - published in 1880.

A contact on another list said he remembers having the Cooper headstone pointed out to him when he was a child in the 1950s/1960s. The open book monument was described as being next to it - but perhaps both have suffered from weather and vandals since then.

That looks amazing.  I'm certain it's no longer there, I have no doubt I would have photographed something as impressive and remember it.

I wonder if it was moved somewhere else?

Added - there are a few small areas that are incredibly overgrown with Ivy but I don't even recall a mound as big as this appears to be.  It's a smallish cemetery.  Will check it out (if I can get in).

I'm off out NOW to visit Ramshorn in Glasgow, then off to a little known graveyard behind Glasgow Cathedral.

Must rush - I have to get ready, catch a bus and be in the centre of Glasgow in just over half an hour!!!

Someone call ahead and get them to dig a hole now - This rushing is killing me!
