any ideas how to find???
« on: Thursday 17 January 08 20:46 GMT (UK) »
I have in my possession four original coloured portraits done in Italy 1944 by a F Scarings. these appear to be of three individual armed forces men. I know that they are these as they belonged to my father in law and before he died he told me that they were men in his regiment when he was stationed in Italy during World War 11 and they were given them by the artist . unfortunately I cannot remember who he said they were of.I have tried 1901 census for the surname Scaring and there is nobody with that name, looked on CWGC and no name of any casualty. the only Scaring family I found was on Ancestry in immigration going to America, and i don't have a world wide subscription to view it.
My romantic notion would be to find out who these men were and give them to their descendants. They are in excellent condition and kept in a metal tube. so if anyone has any ideas of where to go next, please let me know, as it is a shame that they are not being viewed.

Hi
I am not sure what regiment he was in but i have a box of five medals, all in mint cindition, with their ribbons.
He has the following 1939-45 Star with battle of britain clasp/ emblem
Africa Star for Ist army
Italy Star
Defence medal with Silver Laurel leaves
War medal 1939-45 with oak leaf
As he lived in Kent i assumed it could be the Buffs!!

Possible certainly, but very dangerous to make that assumption!  :)

Are the portraits of men in uniform? If so, there may be visual clues to their regiment and rank that would help with possible identification. Badges, medals, insignia, uniform details etc etc

the portraits are head and shoulders only. It is an assumption, perhaps because he talked of the Buffs, but that could be because he was proud to be Kentish!!! anyway on the side of the small box of medals from O.H.M.S there is a serial number. 2/1/32603B I don't know if that means anything.

I've just noticed what you described the medals as.
1939-45 star with Battle of Britain clasp makes him very definitely RAF aircrew and not Army at all!!!

Hi Terri !

If you scroll to WW2 you'll be able to see the medals

Maybe the RAF medal belonged to somebody else in the family or a friend !

Silly question, but took the records off of his campaign stars, Clasps and mendals form that was sent with his medals. i have just looked at them all and realised that I have made a boob!! there is only a tick next to the 1st army under the Clasp or emblem (if awarded). In the box are all the medals in their envelopes, tow of them had not been opened and one of them was the Star, with no clasp, so i think he didn't get a clasp with it.
Also on another tack I have been looking at the ellis Island passenger site and saw a lot of SCARINGI families are registered as sailing from Italy to New York. Looking at the portraits the signature is most likely to be F Scaringi. the writing and numbers looks very much as if the person was of italian extraction. i know this as I was once married to a Spaniard and their wrting of letters andnumbers is very different to our writing.
I will try to make time tomorrow to scan these pictures and see if I can make them smaller and put them on this site. Who knows, someone might recognise them as one of their ancestors.
regards
terrri

Have scanned portraits but putting them on here is causing me a headache. It keeps telling me the file is too big. so I am posting a link to them and hope it works. Perhaps someone will recognise a relative of 50 years ago.
