Fun Photo Date and Restore, Please
« on: Thursday 17 January 08 07:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi everybody,

Could you suggest a date for this picture?
Also, suggest an age for the subject - I'd say 40's, but I'm not very good at guessing ages. I can't see a wedding ring, though it may be hidden.
When did 'fun' photos come into fashion? I have quite a few - weird family!
I'd appreciate it if someone could clean the image up.

Many thanks,

Nigel

She appears to have her hair up in the Loose Pompadour hairstyle. This styling came into fashion from about 1897 and stayed in until about 1914/15 when shorter hair was starting to be worn. Taking it that she may have kept her skirt on underneath the kimono and that there is no hemline showing on the vamp of the footwear I would base a date line of about 1910 or there abouts. The trouble is that because she "dressed up" there really, from a fashion point of view, nothing to go on.

You could post it on the Yorkshire page - someone may know when the photographer was working, which would narrow it down a bit, or even have a photo of a similarly attired relation.

Might they have been a theatrical family or music hall ?

Hi,

Irene, thank you so much for the great restoration.

Old Rowley - thanks, a 1910 date seems good. I believe this is Elizabeth Alice Aston, born Bilston in 1870. Her family moved to Streethouse, Yorkshire about 1873. She was in domestic service in Halifax by 1891. This photo was sent to her mother, who died in 1917.

Woodentop - I have no clues that she was 'theatrical', but maybe she did do amateur dramatics? I think at some time photograpic studios started promoting these non-traditional pictures - I have a few of my grandfather Dedross and his bride from 1915-20 that all have costumes involved.

Cheers,

Nigel
