People's opinions wanted please.
« on: Monday 14 January 08 18:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Today I was in my local library checking/confirming details about my people when I came across something interesting (for me anyhow).

I can't put a link up so I'll give as much info as I can to help you finf where I was.

I was looking for George Taylor  (my GGfather, born about 1844) in the 1891 census, he was born in tilmanstone, kent.

When I saw the original image for him, it showed an odd word in the "where born" column by the word "tilmanstone".

Would anyone care to hazard a guess or an opinion on what it says, I know what I think it says, but i'd like some other opinions please.

Thank you all in advance.

Istari

Here is a snippet of the census that Istari is talking about.

I think it says......Tilmanstone and then Lyntown?

That's my best guess!

Have you got all the Census records for George Taylor ?

In 1851
born 1843 Tilmanstone (with parents William b 1810 Sarah b1813 + 3 kids)
civil parish : Tilmanstone   (all the family)
Registeration district Eastry
Sub District Eythorn

In 1861
 born 1843 Tilmanstone
 Civil parish : Lynsted
Registeration District : Faversham
Sub District : Teynham

I think he was most definiately born in Tilmanstone the word in brackets is only really referring to district and you can see even on Census records it changes

Hi,  I was brought up in the East Kent area and think it may be a place called Lymne.

I am looking for my Fathers family in that area (Wellard)

Sorry having looked more closely at the map I think Lymne would be too far away.  I remember there was a coal mine at Tilmanstone and Betteshanger from my childood.
