Cranleigh

I have an ancestor who was born in College Road, Cranleigh, Surrey in 1914. I cannot find College Road on any modern maps of Cranleigh. Would anyone know where this might be?

Presumably the college in question is Cranleigh School.

There is a website which mentions a  Stemp family at "San Nicolo" in College Road in 1939/40. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/the.nook/charts/s/stemp317.htm

The Stemp family is listed at "St Nicolo" in Cranleigh in the 1913 Surrey Directory on http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

San Nicolo or St Nicolo is presumably a play on the name of St Nicholas - the parish church of Cranleigh - so perhaps College Road lay between the church and the school.

So - somewhere between the church and school. Maybe there was a back lane from the village into the school in those days which is no longer in use?

Cranleigh School has never been known as Cranleigh College nor is there a College Road to the best of my knowledge in Cranleigh, Surrey

There was no back lane to the school. The road from the village to the school was and is Horseshoe Lane.

The 1911 census clearly shows a College Road amongst the list of streets in Cranleigh, Surrey!

In the 1911 enumerators list, the 5 households in College Road ( Stemp, Stedman, Ware, Mould, Henley) are listed as the final entries under Horseshoe Lane.

The name "College Road" would suggest that it ran from Horseshoe Lane towards, or past,  the school.

The Francis Frith picture  APPEARS to be taken on Horseshoe Lane as you approach the Sanny Lane (formerly Elm Lane) entrance to the School.  There are houses there which date back to that time - Willscote for example which was used as the house for younger boys.

In all my research I have never seen references from the school to College Road or any variances thereof.  Horseshoe Lane (which runs from the Common past the front of the School) was a track until tarmac was laid around 1906 - we have a letter from a pupil who recalls falling into the wet tar on arrival at the school; incidentally, he calls it Horseshoe Lane.

It seems that if, for a period, part of this road was known, formally or informally, as College Road then it would be quite easy to check where it ran as many of the houses remain with, I believe, the same names they have had for a long time.

The building/farm I referred to as "Wakenhurst" could perhaps be Wakehurst - now housing development of 4 flats? As mentioned on Zoopla?

Appears to be off Horseshoe Lane.
Where Horseshoe Lane forms one side of The Common, there appear to be a couple of unnamed roads/lanes - could one of these be what is left of College Road?
