Old Cumnock
« on: Monday 14 January 08 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm after any information as to where I can obtain help/information about a Catholic Birth in the Old Cumnock area.  My GG Grandfather James Hannan was born in about 1851/1852 (as found on the 1891 census)  although previous census say he is born Scotland and Ayreshire.  His Father ( another James Hannan) was born in Ireland; no county mentioned but his wife was called Margaret and in 1861 they lived in County Durham.  I can not locate any information to him with this town/village and any help would be great.  Maybe a church name, record office address anything.

Cheers

Chappie

Hi Chappie

I'm not Catholic nor is any of my family research taking me in those directions....however...that said.....a good google search has turned up a few sites worth further exploration.

http://www.gallowaydiocese.org.uk/

http://www.catholic-heritage.net/sca/

http://home.att.net/~Local_Catholic/#type-records

http://www.nas.gov.uk/doingResearch/NASrecords.asp

From the website just above I know the NAS claim to have pre 1855 Catholic baptisms but I'm uncertain if the local diocese may also retain copies.  This quote from the NAS webpage...

"Kirk session, presbytery and synod records for the Church of Scotland, Free Church, and various dissenting ('seceding') congregations; records of the Scottish Episcopal Church; copies of the records of baptisms, marriages and burials for Roman Catholics before 1855. Note that Church of Scotland baptisms, marriages and burials are held by the General Register Office for Scotland although there are a small number of records of baptisms for 1843-1860 held by the NAS."

I hope this info may help you to track down the baptism you are seeking.

Best wishes
Jean

The Catholic church in the area was The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Patrick. Located in a small village with I expect around 200 homes but no longer their called Birnieknowe near Commonloch. It was situated in the back roads between Auchenleck / Lugar / Cronnberry. the only remnents I can see in google maps is a stone cross located where the church was.
Hope this helps
