1841 Deaton Family
« on: Monday 14 January 08 04:55 GMT (UK) »
I would very much appreciate a look up of the 1841 census at Bethnal Green for the Deaton family.  I am interested in a Joseph Deaton, who states in his will that he is Joseph Deaton the younger, and his brother is a James.  The name varies in spelling, i.e. Deighton.

Joseph would have been born around 1832.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,
Have spent the last hour going through all the variations of the surname that I could think of (plus a lot I didn't think of ie. doing a soundex).
I can find no one that 'fits the criteria' in the London/Middlesex area - so either they are not there, or more likely mistranscribed.
Do you have any other family member names that we could possibly look for?
Unfortunately there are just too many Joseph / James to go through not using surnames.
Sorry I didn't find them

Hi Cougar,

So sorry that you had to spend an hour looking for Joseph Deaton without success.

The only other brother that I can find was a William, another common name.

I couldn't find Joseph in the 1881 census either, but he does appear in the 1901 census.  I've just thought, he married his second wife in 1881, the March quarter so maybe they were holidaying somewhere, he wasn't short of a bob or two.  My sister-in-law had no luck when she went to Somerset House many many years ago.  We wonder if  the records were destroyed in the War, or as you say the name was mistranscribed.

The only other bit of information was that Joseph Deaton born 1832 might have been something to do with the Bryant Box Manufacturers.  He certainly wasn't poor like the rest of the relatives.

Thank you so much again for your time.

Hi  Peachface
No problems - gives me something to do.
I did a 'google' of Bryant Box Manufacturers but only came up with Bryant & May - the match people.
Is this the same as you are talking about?
If so, the national archives hold info about the company who began production in 1861 and ceased in 1992 under their Hackney archives section.
Cheers, Cougar

Hi Cougar,

I also did a Google search on the Bryant and May Box Manufacturer, but my husband has just told me that he thinks that Joseph Deaton sold his business of box manufacturing to them, but I don't know where to look for that information.

Terrible terrible conditions in those days!

If all else fails write to the archivist  and he/she should be able to let you know if there is any connection between your Joseph Deaton & the Bryant & May manufacturers.

Hi Peach

Do you have a father's name and occupation from one of the marriage certs? Presumably Joseph from the will but just making sure...

Also, do you have the ref for them in 1851?

thanks
