Talking of lakes, which you weren't going to do: 

The Grandad of mine that lived in the prefab is supposed to have fallen out of a rowing boat into the lake while a bit merry.

Ooops! I fell into the lake when I was 5 and my Dad jumped in to save me. They took us to the boat house and gave us blankets to wrap round us while they dried our clothes off round a massive open fire. When my Dad heard that they had sent for an ambulance he dressed us quickly and I remember running home with him. I have still got a phobia about water and never learned to swim.

Just had an idea. I wonder if I knew your Grandad. If you PM me with his name I will get my thinking cap on.

When the prefabs in Newton Heath (the ones near Brookdale Park school) were taken down it was done very carefully. Everything was taken out and loaded on lorries and then they were taken down section by section.
We were told they were being taken to Spain to be reconstructed as holiday homes.

While we are not discussing the lake, can I remind people about the lions I used to sit on outside Heaton Hall. Also the ice cream etc we used to buy in what I know is the orangery?

PS I was born in Heaton Park road, clearly visible from the Bell Tower in the park.

Some may and some may not know but the park had a serious upgrade/restoration project done to it a couple of years ago. The only thing that did not get touched was the hall "it's still a disgrace" for a historical building

The old paddling pool has gone, the pets corner has moved, the tennis courts have gone, the fountain outside the hall is now in Albert square Manchester, New buildings at the boating lake, new kids play area near farm, new bowling greens (ex commonwealth games) by the St Margarets entrance, old bowling greens now a massive lawn area.

It is still a great place to collect conkers, my fav (secret) conker tree still produces them. 

Kooky I think every kid in manchester/bury must have sat on them lions, they went for repair a few years ago.
