Hello.

I wonder if any Rootschatter is going to the London Metropolitan Archives and would have the time to look for some admittance notes for me please?

If so, I am hoping for some information on a great aunt called Ethel Ballard who was in the Asylum in the 1901 census age 39 and born in Kensington. She was actually born in 1866, so would have been about 34.

I don't know how difficult it is to look for as I have never been to the Archives. But hope someone will know and be able to help.

I was at the LMA today and had a quick look in the indexes for Hanwell, now known as St Bernards.

There are indexes for admissions but they are by date eg 1896-1898, 1898-1900, 1900-1902.

There also appears to be a list of patients 1860-1909, but I don't know if this is open yet as the last entry in 1909 is less than 100 years old.

I'm at the LMA every Thursday on a course which runs until March and I have time at the end of each session to do research, so if you want I'll have a look at the list of patients next week, if it's open, and see if there are any more clues with regard to date of admission and the patients medical condition.

Today at the LMA, I consulted Hanwell Asylum's List of Patients 1860-1909 (H11/HLL/B/08C/005) and Ethel Ballard is not listed from 1860, which I know is prior to her birth, until 1902 which is well after the date of the 1901 census.

The lady with initials EB on the census appears not to be your great aunt.

I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread Cranstone.  My gr aunt died while in Hanwell in 1899, I have her death certificate.

I was wondering if you would mind having a look for me Dawn if you have time.  Somebody did a search for me in the admissions a while back, but she had to have a private viewing because the book was too delicate.  My gr aunt wasn't in there.

But that was before I found her in the 1891 census, with just her initials, and sent for her death certificate.

I don't know how long she was actually in there, but she had her own coffee shop in 1871.  Then she was in there on the 1881 census, and died in 1899.  I think it was one of the asylums that weren't too bad from what I've seen on google.

Hopefully there will be something in the deaths about her.  Let me know if you're able to, and I will give you her details.

Rather than cluttering up Cranstone's thread with another name, please start a new thread with 'Hanwell Asylum look-up' as the title and post the name you are looking for in there. Please add in any other information you feel is relevant such as dates and an area of London you think she was living in before her admittance.

I had a similar problem a while ago.  I found an entry in 1871 of an R M, with the same year of birth and place as my gr grandfather.  He is missing for around 20 years of the censuses.  I was really excited as it all fit in.  It was an orphanage, and they checked their records for me very kindly, but it turned out not to be him. 

I know how disappointing it is.  I still haven't found where he was for 20 years, but I won't give up yet
