Unusual Wedding pic for colour and comment please
« on: Sunday 13 January 08 14:14 GMT (UK) »
This lady is my wifes Gt. Grandmother - Emily Curd nee Bashford (1868-1946) on her wedding day in Croydon 4 Sep 1897. As you can see, she is not wearing the traditional white for a bride. We think this is because she had had a child out of wedlock - a man whose identity we have not discovered. Would the colour of this dress have been black (or dark blue)? and was it common for "fallen" Victorian brides to marry in this attire? I wonder if this public display of the fact that she had had a pre marital child would have been humiliating or embarrasing for her?

For the colour meisters - her hair was brown and her eyes were blue.

Thank you very much

Keith,

I don't think this is a photo of atonement - it looks like the celebration that it is.

It is a great photo, and the bride is obviously in her best dress. It was about this time that mass produced dresses became available. This is a good one.

Getting married in white was only a luxury that the well off could afford, the average needed a dress that they could use again for that special occasion.

In my family at this time about 1/3 of all 1st born were outside of wedlock. I think that it was only later that it became a stigma.

Great photo.

Rog

Hi Keith

Was your wife's gr grandmother born in this country?  The dress looks sort of Russian-style or something like that.  Maybe Jewish?  Could just be the fashion at the time.  It's a lovely dress, as is the head-dress.
